State responds to GM layoffs
From the WCLO newsroom:
The state begins its response Friday for the autoworkers in Janesville expected to lose their jobs this summer.
The State Department of Workforce Development is holding its first meeting of a Rapid Response Team to deal with the layoffs announced at General Motor's earlier in the week. DWD Secretary Roberta Gassman tells WCLO's Stan Milam Show several groups will be part of the meeting.
Gassman says applying for federal grants will top the agenda. She does offer hope for GM workers, saying they have skills valued by today's employers. Gassman urges workers expecting to be displaced to take advantage of any programs offered.
The Rapid Response Team meeting will include officials from the GM plant, union leaders, business organizations, and state representatives.

I don't believe May 15th is the day for Lear to inform the state...because Lear is already laid off on the 1st of July. There is a company wide shut down(GM) and I don't believe Lear is paid /use vacation like GM.Oh no here comes some more unfairness GM vs. Lear.

Maybe Lear isn't laying off any workers. They have accounts with other manufacturers. Just speculating. If the long-term lay off was to be effective July 14th, would they not have until May 15th, per state statute, to notify the DWD? Just wondering..... And, I know comparing GM and Lear is like comparing apples to oranges.....it was just specutlation and conjecture.

Lear-Gm apples to oranges Lear DOESN"T get covered by GM announcement ...Lear hasn't said anything to their workers other than what they have read in the paper !! This is the same thing they did in 84-85... Mark my words in June/July after they get the numbers of buy-out retires etc. they will need all/plus 700 employees . GM has sent notices/letters to past summer help asking if they were intrested in work !!!

hey cardtrader-excellent post, and I agree that we need to let it be known how we feel. Just this morning I saw how much Bush was asking for to continue to fund the war through next spring, and also saw his dismal approval (or lack of) ratings-by far the lowest in history. Maybe if he'd kept it at home more....

I feel for the people and the famlies involved in this time, when our government cares more about fighting a war across the world then they do about looking after the people of this great country, we put these people in office I sure as hell hope they know we will take them out just as fast. We need people in office to represent all the people all the time instead of representing thereselves. People call your congressmen and complain let your voices be heard. This is a numbers game the more people who call the louder the Voice.

this is going to be bad, all these companies laying off. they better be geting a rapid response team for these other companies.gm gets these perks because their union reps. fought for this,(this is my understanding) places like lsi, where their union people dont do jack for them are the ones to be held responsible for whats going to happen to those employees.if im wrong on any of this info,. please feel free to correct it. instesd of everyone cursing up gm, what they need to do is direct all this rage at the governor for his actions, and the union reps., at the plant you are working at. my husband works at lsi, and im emailing the governor and asking him why these other people who are getting layed off, are not getting the same assistance, and you should do the same. as far as lsi is concerned, they are the worse employers, that have ever been out there, they dont give a crap about their employees, at least gm does.

I would imagine if any business were to lay off a substantial number of employees, almost 1000 in any community, the state would offer help. Regardless of where they were employed. Losing your job stinks, no matter where you work or how much you make. Have some sympathy for families that will be affected, imagine losing your job.

I'm wondering if Lear hasn't announced the layoffs because they don't have to? I understand what the State law is, but maybe it is already covered under some sort of umbrella since GM announced it?? They are the same union. I don't know......

booner--while I can understand the validity in you feeling that way, many are placing "blame" and hatred for GM workers on the wrong player. It isn't the guy who has worked at GM for 40 years, been on the picket line, sold belongings due to the long strike in the 80's just to eek by, lost hearing in his left ear, missed out on many of his children's activities because he had a job to do AND took pride in that job (whoa! there's a new one!), worked when the inside temperature was over 110 degrees, that lawmakers, city officials and presidential candidates seem to all echo the sentiment that if you aren't a GM employee, you mean nothing. Blame it on the politicians who are hopping around these layoffs and uncertain times like a pawn on a chess board, just to shout "King me!" in the end. Don't hate the player, hate the game....as the saying goes!

Does anyone eles wonder why Lear hasn't announed a lay-off ??? Lear MISSED the time table to the state ??? (60 days)Case in point would be Simmons, announed lay-offs yesterday and state is ALREADY to help them !!! When this all started I said this was/is a way for GM to hire @ $14.00 and get the old workers out. I have read about sales being low,the days on hand are nothing new even when they are selling !!!!

GIVE ME A BREAK----Let the union at General Motors figure it out themselves.....I have a business in very northen Wisconsin and business is so bad, we are living off the equity in our business. You don't see the governor forming a plan to help us, do you? It is ridiculous that he thinks he needs to help GM with funds that need to go to other things in Wisconsin.

The state is throwing a few bones there way to calm the waves alittle before the big one which is plant closing. I loved to read how GM is so bad, really they are trying to do things smoothy in progression. It would be bad for future PR to slam the doors shut all at once.
GM spends 100 times more on PR then they will with paying employees to leave.IT IS A BIG PICTURE THING.

Opinionsforfree: I totally agree with you. And the GMers wonder why others in the community sometimes have a bad opinion of GM. This is a prime example. Seems nobody else matters........

I think the employees from other firms that are losing their job should get the special treat that GM employees are? What makes GM employee more special than say someone that works are Lear or SSI?

both gm and the union are not telling the janesville gm employees the whole truth , while they are saying they cant transfer because there are not any job opening s at any other plants , fort wayne is accepting application referrals until may 2 , for the lower tier paid employees , sad to see an employer do this to their employees after they voted to try to work with gm and make concessions to help the company survive only to be sold down the river
