A Janesville man was killed and a Fort Atkinson woman injured after a one-car rollover accident in Center Township early this morning, according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff's Department.

Jason D. Roettger, 33, was killed after he apparently lost control of his car around 1 a.m. on a curve on County H, the release said. The car crossed the centerline and slid into a ditch.

Roettger was pronounced dead on the scene. A passenger, Kathleen L. Simon, was transported to Mercy Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the release said.

Police believe alcohol and speed were both factors in the accident, the release said.

*DWI is ridiculous. It is a disease and not a choice at that point. A disease needs professional help, long term, professional help.*

Drinking and driving is not a disease. Making bad choices over and over again is not a disease.

As for long term professional help, I hear there is plenty of that in prison. At what point does society start putting habitual DWIers in prison for both their own good and the safety of society? What good is all the anti-DWI propaganda and threats if there is no punishment handed out to offenders?

Regardless of who he was, it is sad to see anyone suffer this type of end to their life. When people talk about the drinking they are not attacking the deceased, they are using the accident as another example to learn from. They are pointing out that after 2nd,3rd, and in this case the 4th DWI something is broken. The person drinking is obviously unable to help themselves. That is where society expects the family, friends, and maybe even the courts to do something for the individual. If family or friends are unable, or unwilling to do what it takes, then we expect the courts to do it for them. The courts failed all of us here. This should not happen. Not to the family, not the the friends, not to the rest of society. They should not lose a loved one, and we should not be continuously placed in danger. I am sorry, 4th, 5th, 6th.... DWI is ridiculous. It is a disease and not a choice at that point. A disease needs professional help, long term, professional help. I am sorry for your loss, and it made me cringe to hear all of what took place on the scanner. I can not imagine the helpless feeling of the responding officers, or the young lady.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. I went to school with him, and he recently moved into the same building as me. It sucks seeing his muddy shoes outside his door, knowing he's not coming back. It's a reality check. My deepest sympathies.

Sympathies send to this young man's family. As far as the one's jumping on the band wagon, how many of you can say that you have NEVER made the ill decision in your younger years to get behind the wheel after having a few cocktails. Bad decision, YES!! LUCKY? YES!! It is unfortuneate that these things happen, but unless your kettle isn't black, please don't diss the deceased. And even then, it is tasteless. Take these tragedies and learn from them. Hopefully, that is the motivation of the media to cover these stories, too show society drinking and driving don't mix. EVER. Use them to make better decisions for yourself, after all that is the only person you can control.

Yes, lilbobby, IF someone else had been killed as a result of this accident, it would have been tragic. But your comment that was removed was out of line and totally unnecessary. Apparently the gazette staff agreed with tammyk1017.

Miss Me, But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the road,
and the sun has set for me.
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room.
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little—but not too long,
and not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that was once shared.
Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take,
and each must go alone.
It’s all a part of the master’s plan,
a step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart,
go to the friends we know.
Bear your sorrow in good deeds. Miss me,
but let me go.

I've known Jason for a while also. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and especially his son. It's really a shame when people feel the need to post negative comments. If this was your friend or family member you wouldn't like it either.

How heartless would it be if he had struck and killed an innocent person driving on public roads, we were all just lucky THIS time.

I'd like to thank stevev for their sympathy. Jason was my cousin and was like my best friend. This is very hard on the whole family. So thank you to all who post comments of support.

I've asked the Gazette to remove lilbobby's comment. That was a heartless things to say.
