Nearly $600 million state budget shortfall still hanging
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin's more than half a billion-dollar budget shortfall is still hanging, as legislative leaders meet behind closed doors trying to reach a compromise.
Different budget repair bills have been passed by the Democratic-controlled Senate and Republican-controlled Assembly, and there are big differences between them.
In a case like this, both bills normally would go to a bipartisan committee of lawmakers from both houses to come up with a compromise plan.
But that policy went nowhere last year, when legislators spun their wheels in a budget deadlock that went on nearly four months beyond the day when the budget was supposed to take effect.
The legislative leaders instead are trying to work things out in private, then get it through the Legislature and to the governor for signing.
