GM plant’s second shift returns Tuesday

By Gazette Staff   March 24, 2008 - 9:51 a.m.

JANESVILLE—After a holiday today, a group of fresh faces will return to the General Motor’s plant on Tuesday.

Second-shift workers will report at their normal time Tuesday.

Last week, second-shift workers were laid off as a result of the United Auto Workers’ strike against American Axle, which supplies the local plant. First-shift workers handled production, and now it’s the second shift’s turn as first-shift employees are laid off this week.

The week of March 31 to April 4 still is scheduled as a non-production week as the plant prepares for a previously announced slowdown on its assembly line. Starting the week of April 7, the local plant’s production line will slow from 52 jobs per hour to 44.

So cardtrader, am I to understand by that remark that it is only the 2nd shift you resent for getting laid off? Because this week, after a Monday (today) holiday, the 1st shift is laid off. Now-I don’t want to be responsible for your absolute fits of rage (makes about as much sense as local GM workers being responsible for their own layoffs these last couple weeks), but you should be prepared: next week they’ll ALL be off work. There oughta be a law!

There was an article in the Detroit Free Press dated March 20 that says American Axle has moved some axle production for GM's large SUV's to it's plant in Mexico. At this rate GM, Ford and Chrysler will never get on the company to settle. And I think that is the only way this is going to be settled.

It will be interesting to see just how long we will run, since the strike at American
Axle is still going on..How can the Janesville plant and Arlington keep going? I read from the Detroit Free press, that Arlington only has enough work till the end of March.. It is a guessing game... I say, Hang in there American Axle people, keep your heads held HIGH..
