Police say armed suspect report possibly a false alarm

JANESVILLE--It might be a case of mistaken identity that brought Janesville Police, Rock County sheriff's deputies, State Patrol units and a helicopter to Janesville's north east side Wednesday afternoon.

Janesville Sgt. Steve DeWitt says a citizen on Satinwood Drive called 911 to report a man armed with a rifle in a backyard. Officers were unable to find the suspect, but a neighbor to the east reported that a man was looking for deer antlers in the nearby woods. The armed suspect was not found, but DeWitt says police believe it may have been the man looking for antlers.

The neighborhood, including a daycare and gymnastics center, was locked down for about an hour and a half.

Concernedparent-you did the right thing. Can you image how many blogs and criticism would be flying around if you didn't report it, and that guy did something unthinkable?
Props to the Janesville & Rock County police, as well as State Troopers, responding as quickly as they did. With all the random shootings happening, never can tell what could have happened.

As for the cougar, that has been in our area for years, close to a decade! Hasn't been a nuisance yet.

Whether a person was found our not doesn't make the report less credible. That just means that the police were not able to find anyone. For every five minutes that go by during a police search the suspect can be up to and beyone one mile away without having a perimeter. So give the person who reported it some slack.

The article didn't say that. I listened to the police scanner and that was how the call came in.

That was for lauriejnsvll. I suppose I should have read concernedparent's post, but I didn't see in the article where it said either of those things.

Where did it say that the man was "possibly intoxicated" and "pointing a rifle at her house"?

This incident was not a false alarm and the police are still working on it this morning! I have no idea what this person was doing, but he was in our backyard, he was aiming at us with a gun with a scope,(not a stick,) and it was very frightening. How would you feel to have a gun aimed at you and your children? I believe you would have phoned the police for help, just like I did!

The woman who reported it should know for sure - she called police saying that a possibly intoxicatsd man was in her backyard pointing a rifle at her house.

NVgrf: You have obviously missed the articles. Yes, we do have a REAL cougar running around the area. It has been spotted in Milton, Edgerton and near the North side of Janesville. I'm sure there are also other towns that it has been spotted but not sure which ones.

First, it was reported he had a rifle; there was no evidence of that after the investigation. Yes there was a cougar report near Janesville/ Milton. As far as being in the woods with a big cat or bears and not being armed, that is done every day. Not everyone is ignorant of wildlife, and very few that understand the wild go armed just because they are in the woods where larger animals are. The PD did the right thing, they had to do an investigation.

The only cougars I am aware are from Craig High School. And the only reason they are out is to search for a gold basketball.

Would you go out looking for antler sheds now knowing there are cougars in the area without a firearm? I know I would, and make sure it was loaded! People do this all the time up north cause of bears. Maybe up north is not all that up north anymore?

Perhaps he had a walking stick, not a bad idea for walking through the woods during this spring thaw, with alternate patches of frozen and soggy, muddy, ground. It would also be useful for poking at the antlers to dislodge any little critters that might be under them.

Maybe he was worried about the cougar.

its not uncommon for someone to mount a camera or a spotting scope to a gun stock. this could be what someone was using to look for the antlers.
