JANESVILLE Police report somebody made another attempt early today to break into the Super Beer Depot, 1621 W. Court St..

“We could tell somebody tried to get in but didn’t know if they did or not because there is no inventory and the owner won’t come and check the place,’’ said Sgt. Charles Aagaard, Janesville police patrol supervisor.

An officer at 12:48 a.m. found a section of plywood put in place after a burglary early Monday morning had been pried away, Aagaard said.

Police arrested four young men early Monday on suspicion of burglarizing the store.

This morning’s incident is the ninth burglary or attempted burglary at the business since January of 2007.

ydk123, you are quite amusing. Again with the .."they just made a mistake" excuse. When will people take responsibility for their own actions??????? Let me see, it is probably the city of Janesville's fault that there is nothing to do at midnight on a Monday. LMAO

I was driving by the place this afternoon and saw a truck backed up to the place taking booze out of the place. Hmmmm, it said Janesville Police Dept. on it. Guess they finally figured out to take the stuff out of the building.

I think the best way to approach this problem is to declare the property an attractive nuisance and a hazard to the public safety. Any locale conducive to crime increases the risk of bodily injury for citizen and law enforcement alike.
There is a responsibility for an owner of an establishment that sells alcohol to properly secure his stock and this owner seems unable to do so because of circumstances beyond his control. Remember that a liquor license is a privilege granted by the city and not the right of all citizens.

Before we get all spun up about the Gazette publishing the information, remember this is a *Newspaper*, and their business is printing the *News*. If they didn't, we'd be reading posts from a lot of angry folks and conspiracy enthusiasts charging that the Gazette is suppressing the news. What they're doing here is a good thing. You really wouldn't like the alternative. Given the bozo operations that pass for newspapers in some similarly sized markets, be thankful for what you have.

I believe the same thing you do, they would have NEVER gotten that idea without someone telling them about it. I never even knew that place was there... im sure that the paper indeed helped them make the idea just to go pick up some alcohol since its an open store with lots to go around..

I have never said these were not mistakes what I have been saying is that seeds were planted for the idea to go to Super Beer Depot and those seeds came from previous reports of an unattended building full of liquor.........

nrb6871 I know some of these boys and i am POSITIVE they are able to read more then just "comic books, video games, and the back of their rolling papers" These kids made a mistake and i think it is horrible that you would make a comment about them without even knowing them. You dont know what they READ or if they even use rolling papers. I would hope that you wouldnt make judgements of people without knowing them, because you never know your kid one day, or even a grandchild could make that same mistake, even though you know they are a good person at heart. EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES

to the ppl saying that its the gazette's fault for the break-ins becuz of what they put in their stories, think about it.....seeing the pictures of the people being charged, do they really look like they read the gazette???? no...the most they probably read is comic books, video games or the back of their rolling papers package.....and it sure isnt JPDs fault.....they only have so many ppl working a shift and dont have the man power to put one person on each block...and if they proposed that then the people bashing JPD would be b*tchin and complaining because their taxes went up to help pay for the extra officers

as easy as it is to get into this country this guy must have a problem other than an abandoned liquer store. and doc. i'm sure you are a nice person, but settle down! let others have an opinion. even though you may not think much of their opinion, lets not try to make others feel as though they will be slandered because of it. some of us think businesses in janesville should be owned and operated by american citizens or those in the process of becomming one. you may not agree, and that is wonderful. all veterans served so you and ALL people may be free to express their opinion without ridicule. unknown,
You are correct. It sounds like the city is trying to do what you describe...maybe not as fast as people would like.

Here is another article by the same reporter, with a little more info. (I'm not suer why there are two, almost identicle articles, but that's for the Gazette to figure out).

cardtrader watch out now zoom is gonna think you to have A screw loose and call you dumb..... Even though you are absolutlly correct on this I agree with you 100%! The paper put the bullseye on this building that has been abbandonded by the owner although we now now the backround of his situation thank you dcsnick1 until you posted that I'm sure evryone just ASUMED he walked away from his business when in fact it all boils down to Home Land Security not letting him back into the country where he owns businesses, (chek out the article on Yahoo's home page about the man stopped at the airport because he had A new Apple lap top Mac Air and they had no idea what it was once they figured it out BY OPENING IT HE MISSED HIS FLIGHT! Sorry I got side tracked there big time but anyhow I stand by my thoughts and back up cardtraders thoughts on this and anyone who thinks otherwise isn't thinking this all the way through! Its A fact now not just an oppinion, and to zoom once again NO I DON'T think these idiots read the gazette but they do go into places where the intellegent people may be speaking about what they read and BOOM SEED PLANTED CALL YOUR BUDDIES CUZ I JUST HEARD ABOUT A PLACE WITH ALL THIS LIQUOR AND NOBODY IS AROUND!!!! Come on take A minute and focus think about it, do you really think those 4 guys were just out driving around sunday night and went past the old Super Beer Depot and said hey lets break in there? No they knew as well as whom ever broke in ther lastnight also. Wake up and see whats going on...........

This is an issue that needs to be resolved by the city manager and city council. Unfortunately, the processes involved can be complicated and slow. The same laws that protect you and me from having our property seized by the police protect this property. I don't blame the Gazette for reporting the news, but maybe they could have left out the part about the inventory left in the building. Still, it is probably common knowledge in some circles and was probably a matter of public record from the city council meeting. I'm sure there are people in this very city just waiting for the council to act in violation of someone's property rights.

I'm sure someone from the Gazette could state this better.

Why should it be the Gazette's job to protect the owners property, or protect criminals from themselves? Do you really want someone from the Gazette making those decisions? When should the Gazette not report a crime?

You are assuming causation. There is no evidence that the Gazette's articles have increased the break-ins. Should the Gazette not post obituaries, because criminals might find an empty home to break into?

Please, lets lay blame where it belongs...on people dumb enough to break the law.

Poor Police Work.....
And another Newspaper that likes to sell copies and not protect the people. It would be to easy for a Newspaper to keep quiet about this to help eliminate additional break ins but lets tell the world so everyone knows. Report what needs to be reported and protect what needs to be protected. It's that simple

If the JDP could legally remove the liqour, don't you think they would? There have been other stories detailing the process that the JDP has to legally follow. Do a search if you want an answer to your original question.

Where does the article above say the JDP is "babysitting"? I'm sure it's part of a regular drive by, but I wouldn't call it babysitting. You are basically saying the JDP doesn't know what they are doing, because they don't remove the liquor. I would defer to their judgment about what is legal.

Blaming the Gazette and JDP for the situation is dumb. I guess I have a different sense of humor.

Why are you so concerned about people dumb enough to break the law? Let the idiot's get caught. I think this is great entertainment. I can't wait to find out who will get caught next.

If you seriously think the Gazette and JPD have set up some "trap", you have a screw loose. Increasing the crime rate in Janesville is not in their best interest. As has been reported in earlier stories, a process has to be followed before the contents can ultimately be removed.

Your totally missing the point here, its this paticular spot that was reported if you think about it you know I'm right...... I'm not saying A report of somebody smoking crack will make people smoke crack, somebody stole A car so I'm gona go steal A car? Heck no all I'm saying by reporting A liquor store that has been abandonded that is still full of liquor (not old skunky beer) that has been getting broken into is enough to plant the seed in alot of peoples minds......

No there is liquor still in the building and on the shelves, however there is no inventory to compare it to to see if anything is missing. Further more there has got to be A way around the laws maybe we are just not looking outside the box, if the police were to remove all of the inventory for safe keeping then that would be legal wouldn't it? Somebody needs to come up with something and they need to do it now! Oh and one more thing mommyopes I am not and would not SLAM the JPD they are trying to do something with this but just need to look deeper into ways of stopping this from hapening over and over, since the paper printed the story about this (open bar) its now become A target!

The problem is that the owner went home overseas and now he can't get back here. I use to deliver beer there. He is a nice guy, but doesn't belong in the liquor buisness. He was hardly there. The city should go in get the inventory out and tear the place down. Funny thing is, is that we have laws to prevent the JPD from going in and taking the stuff. But a person can have 6 or 7 DWI and still be on the streets. The owner of the liquor store will never come back here.....He can't get into the country.

Gee, now why didn't the JPD figure that out?(Total sarcasm there) Because they are the JPD and have to follow the law. If it were that simple to back a truck up and take the inventory, don't you think they would have already done it? The owner of the business might not give a crap, but there are still laws that prevent the cops from entering and taking the inventory. I'm sure you are just another resident that LOVES slamming the JPD.

Well if the gazette keeps telling us there is still inventory in the building but nobody knows how much, well thats almost like advertising an open bar. Why dosen't the police remove all the booze from this abandonned place and hold it until its figured out whats going to happen? Now that everybody knows its A mark to get broken into its just trouble waiting to happen! It is starting to look like between the paper and the police they are just trying to get enough break-ins to have the city take the property away from the owner who obviously could care less about his tax write off business...... Its time to do the right thing here get A truck and load it up haul the attraction away!
