MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Two law firms say they’re suing cable television giant Charter Communications for failing to pay certain employees for certain tasks.

Lawyers for the Madison-based firms say they’ve been given the go-ahead to expand their lawsuit on behalf of one client into a federal class action lawsuit.

Now the firms are seeking other people to join in the case filed in August on behalf of a Janesville technician.

The firms say their suit seeks unpaid wages and overtime compensation for about 8,000 current and former employees.

A spokeswoman for St. Louis-based Charter says she’s looking at the case and will comment later.

Doc, you'll be regretting it if you got Comcast. They make Charter look good. Dont believe me, ask the Rockford people who now are saddled with that company.
.
My gripes with charter, other than the usual garbage channels we got saddled with and channels that were moved from ext basic to digital (should had moved Uni to digital instead of G4TV. My dog is ticked since he cant watch Star Trek TNG. Funny as hell seeing a dog stare intently at a TV show.:D).
.
My biggie is the lack of techs that actually have a clue. Seems like the ones that know what they are doing are outnumbered 8 to 1. We had a problem with the internet dropping every 3 min. First guy tried some stuff and still did it after he left. 2nd guy came out, plopped down in front of my computer and just belittled the first tech that was there. Then tried to tell me linux wont work on charter internet. Turn my linux computer on and voila, it got online. I guess linux doesnt work then.hehe. He left but not before trying to upsell "a protection plan for the wiring" and then had the nerve to say he has to charge for a service call even though he never fixed a thing. Yeah riiiight. Get the f out now. Problem turned out to be an upgrade in modem software which my modem wasnt compatible with. So ended up buying a new one compatable with docsys v2. Instead of just telling me when I called that they upgraded the modem software and would need such and such version, I had to go figure it out myself.

From knowing some, and talking to others who work for Charter, this law suit sounds like a disgruntled employee. Employees currently get free cable TV, free internet, and discounted other services such as Telephone service. This alone is about over $100 a month. Vehicles to drive to and from work. Figuring over $3 a gallon for gas, normal wear and tear on a car, maintenance, and just convince of being given a free car, that’s maybe worth what? One gallon of gas a day? Maybe another $80-$100 a month? So a potential saving of $200 or more a month. And someone is suing them over a couple dollars in electricity a month? Or the incontinence of having to take some equipment into their home for safety?

I’m no math wizard, but I think 200 is still greater than 5, or 50. Their employees are making a killing on the free services and free ride, so much that it makes no sense to do such a thing as this. And the potential losses of services and vehicle greatly outweigh the minor cost of the complaint.

Is it the employee right to get paid for such activities? Of course it is. But when the benefits already given outweigh the penalties of the actions, the choice is clear. Enjoy the free things given, as compensation for the minor inconvenience of the other.

WOW this article has nothing to do with not getting the NFL network or how many issues you have with your cable. The sad thing is the only thing to come out of this lawsuit is that all employed with charter with the privlige to take there vehicle home will be forced to drive there personal vehicle to and from work "you don't get paid for that" and drop off our phones to charge at the office every night "how convenient". You know what after each office spends a few thousand expanding parking lots or buying bigger spaces your cable bill won't be any cheaper. Amazing how one person could spoil it for everyone...

First off, the amount of money a company like Charter can save by outsourcing, is HUGE. Most large companies are all doing this.Yeah, I don't like it either, but it's not going to change. Second, I currently have Comcast for service, and there are comparable in every asspect,(one is no better that the other). Lets get to the issue at hand. I have been employed with Charter for over 10 years and have NEVER been denied pay for the hours i've worked. I think Charter is a great company to work for, and have never had any real issues to complain about. Sure everyone would like to earn a better living, but not like this. The company vehicles are one of the biggest benefits to working here. I think this is the most rediculous thing someone has ever tried to pull!

Why doesn't charter hire American people I am sick and tired of calling them for service issues or questions and you get someone from India. They didn't even know what baseball was when I called I am sick of these call centers trying to save a buck pay your American employees what they deserve and hire Americans you cheap people. We pay enough and you big wigs get paid enough pay your front line people who do all the dirty work so you get your big fat bonuses. They get nothing just it your job.

Unknown you just echoed my thoughts from yesterday so yes you are correct and chch67 how much gas does it take to deliver cable TV to my house? Zero none its all airwaves and cables fiber optics that have been in place since gas was $1.29 so gas prices should not affect my cable costs and with the dropped channels it actually brought their overall costs down yet all of ours went up! Comcast or Time Warner needs to come save us from the succubiss we know as Charter cable.........

it isnt just charter that raises rates look at your electricity, or gas prices or groceries. Charter just doesnt raise the rates because they feel like they have to pay a percentage to the city for each customer hooked up to services same with the broadcasters who actually own these channels when they charge more the rates go up.

Charter does pay overtime and lots of it. the one person complaining is complaining that he has to take equipment (meters etc) in his home at night and has use electricty to plug in his nextel but what this tech fails to realize is charter allows the techs to take there vehicles home at night and the gas is supplied by charter he feels he should be paid to drive to work and home. Charter also gives discounted service to their employees as a benefit too.

Okay, people, let’s get back to the real issue at hand. First and foremost, there are over 8,000 hard working Charter employees’ out there that have been denied their state and federal rights to overtime pay—how would you feel if it were you? In these hard economic times we should all stand behind the workers in their plight to be paid a fair wage for a long days work. These laws were put into place to protect you the workers, not the business owners. Unfortunately, most workers are afraid of being fired if they file a complaint with the Department of Labor/Wage & Hours Division. Not the case! Workers are protected by state and federal laws against retaliation by employers. If the employer is found guilty of retaliation (which is not that hard to prove) they will face very heavy fines and they could also be sued independently by the employee(s) in civil court.

You do have other options...it is called a satelite dish. I switched 3 years ago and never regretted it. Charter was nothing but problems! I love the dish network!

Gee...Charter do anything wrong???? I've been out of state for three months with everything closed up at my Janesville home and I just got a bill for $35 more than normal. Must be the CEO isn't making enough millions for himself. Charter doesn't care if you use the service or not. If I had another cable option, you can bet your sweet "bundle" I'd take it.

Wonderful I guess that means we can look forward to another price increase without any new channels being added to justify it! Hey nothing on 16 nothing on 18 and wow nothing on 50 still, and they claim they have no place to put the Big Ten network or the NFL channel,? Why don't we have any Milwaukee channels anymore? I really wish Comcast would come into our market only then would Charter be forced to provide the kind of service we pay for and deserve!!!!!!!!!!!
