Monroe girls bring home state basketball title
MADISON—There’s a fondue party in Monroe tonight, as the Lady Cheesemakers bring home the team’s second state basketball title in three years after defeating Freedom, 42-34, in the WIAA Division 2 state championship game Saturday.
Emily Rufenacht sunk two free throws with 44 seconds left and drove for the layup that sealed the deal on the Irish, who were making their first trip to state.
Monroe freshman Kyleigh Sellnow scored eight points as Monroe took a 20-13 halftime lead. But Freedom’s Stacie Van Handel answered with 10 of her 12 points in the third quarter.
The Lady Cheesemakers were last the Division 2 state champs in 2006.
