The National Weather Service in Sullivan has issued a flood watch for the Rock River at Fort Atkinson from Monday evening until further notice.

At 10:15 a.m. Saturday, the stage was 4.9 feet. Minor flooding is possible. Flood stage is 6.0 feet and may be reached by Monday evening.

The Rock River basin is expected to continue rising slowly over the next couple weeks. Because of the record or near record seasonal snowfall this winter, much of the river basin will exceed moderate or major flood stage by early April.

The latest spring flood outlook indicates the Rock River at Fort Atkinson has a greater than 90 percent chance of exceeding record flood stage by early April. The forecasted crest is 9.1 feet, nearly 2 feet above the record of 7.3 feet.

While flooding is not expected to occur for at least a couple days, this flood watch is intended to provide extra lead time for such an unprecedented event.

good post beachsexton....I too read the NOAA report. Also, I googled the Lake District earlier, they too seem to have some local perspective and expertise...

I also checked the fishing report and it indicates there is 20+ inches of ice still on the lake, so that will have a big impact on the Rock River as well.

It appears from the link provided by MrScott, no "record" flood is being predicted for Lake Koshkonong, yet.

Perhaps StaceyU2 should add to this story and not "turn right" at the I-90 bridge, but rather "look down" at the I-90 bridge in Newville.

I am not sure why this is to be taken lightly. StaceyU2, good response and thanks for the chuckle. Here is a point of info for jdd, and any others like jdd; if Fort is near flood stage, then the other 4000+ people in the Lake District are also going to experience water issues. Mr. Scott is right in pointing out this is an informational story to warn those that that have homes near the water. Remember, some owners live elsewhere and reading the paper may be their only way of keeping tabs on the severity. As of five minutes ago on the NOAA website, http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ahps2/hydrograph... the measuring station in Newville is expected to hit 10.1 ft. on Easter. Here is a great graph representing the historical actions of the lake in the spring compared to the record snow & rain we have experienced. Let's hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Remember, the melting is nowhere near over. We are just beginning to see the rains, melting, and ice break-up! Below I have listed the typical effects of reaching certain benchmarks per NOAA:
*******************************************
11.3 THERE IS KNEE-DEEP WATER OVER BLACKHAWK ROAD. LAMP ROAD ON WEST SIDE OF RIVER ALSO BECOMES FLOODED. LAKE KOSHKONONG MERGES WITH MUD LAKE TO THE EAST OF LAKE KOSHKONONG
*
11.1 WIDESPREAD FLOODING IN TOWN OF KOSHKONONG AND TOWN OF SUMNER
*
10.5 Water reaches Oxbow Bend Road in the area of the gage on the east side of the lake
*
10.0 Water affects homes and boat docks in the Blackhawk Island area of Lake Koshkonong on the north side of the lake. Floodwaters spread over low spots in Blackhawk Lake Road in the area where the Rock River enters the lake
*
9.5 Water is into low lying areas along Lake Koshkonong
*
9.0 Water spreads into low lying areas along Lake Koshkonong
********************************************
Just because the story does not deal with the river near Janesville specifically, does not mean it is not worthy of coverage. In all reality, the water problems up stream usually mean water problems down stream.

Just where is this town? Try reading what you type. This article is almost as bad as the Brodhead flood article.
