The teachers union has agreed with the Janesville school administration’s plan to make up two snow days on Saturdays in April and May.

Sam Loizzo, president of the Janesville Education Association, confirmed the agreement Thursday. The JEA had to sign off on the makeup schedule because the union’s current contract prohibits make-up days on Saturdays.

Janesville students are required to attend classes on Saturday, April 12, and Saturday, May 3.

Thats absolutely right the teachers are not getting anything extra because THIS IS NOT AN EXTRA DAY ITS A MAKE-UP DAY ONE YOU TEACHERS ARE PAID FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE! If you miss A day of work on A regular job most don't get payed....... If I'm not at work I don't get paid so whats the big deal? Gotta make it up somewhere don't you?

In response to the teachers being in it for the money:
We get nothing extra for working those days. We don't get a bit of money more than our normal salary for any second we work outside of contract time. We are simply making up a day we had missed.

Play by the rules, everyone else has too. It states school is not to be held on Saturday and they know that. Breaking the rules lets everyone break them. The teachers r in it for the overtime we all know that, it's not the kids it's for the money. Duh

My union helped the district out of a jam, a very costly jam. Again, there were other options. Too late though. I hope the district remembers this one.

swordfish...."there were other options if our district would have been proactive about it."
.
Sounds like your union should have been proactive about it. They knew it had to be done.

The headline "teachers sign off on make-up dates" is false. None of us teachers were ever asked. We found out just like everybody else did, through the gazette. I do understand that these days need to be made up, but there were other options if our district would have been proactive about it.

edubswoman68 - Not only do the students have a required amount of days and/or minutes to complete, but the teachers are contracted for a specific number of days too. This is why they have to be there all day.

Come-on reps...what happened to work the contract?? You still do not have a contract so why bow to the district? Im glad my union has a little more bells.

Yep, this all sounds like a union issue.

The only thing I don't understand is why do the HS teachers have to stay all day when the students only have to stay for a couple of hours. I don't think that is fair. I am also for these makeup days but be fair to the teachers as well.

Oh, boy ... now watch these comments heat up! (By the way, I am all for these makeup days. However, I also believe more hours should be added to each day.)
