Monroe girls headed to state championship
MADISON—Monroe is headed to the state championship for the second time in three years, after the Lady Cheesemakers defeated Altoona, 49-47, in the Division 2 semifinals Wisconsin State Girls Basketball Tournament.
Monroe advances to tomorrow's championship game against Freedom, which beat top-ranked and previously undefeated Grafton, 65-61, in overtime in today's other Division 2 semifinal.
Monroe held a comfortable 30-16 halftime lead and still led 35-25 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Altoona cut a 19-point deficit to 10 after three quarters and got within 45-44 with 1:09 left.
Monroe’s Jamie Armstrong hit a 3-pointer with 41 seconds left. Altoona’s Monica Rasmussen scored on a layup, bringing the Railroaders closer, 49-46.
As the horn blew, Calyn Bidlingmaier of Monroe fouled Tiffany Gregorich of Altoona as she shot from inside the 3-point arc. She sunk the first free throw and intentionally missed the second.
