Janesville adds sugar at wastewater treatment plant
The city of Janesville works on a more eco-friendly sewer treatment system.
An unusual ingredient is being added at Janesville's Wastewater Treatment Plant. Utilities Director Dan Lynch says sugar along with molasses is taking the place of some less environmentally friendly chemicals. This should cut down on the amount of harmful chemicals at risk of being released into the Rock River. Lynch says a biological process should provide benefits over the chemical process. Lynch says the city has hired the Earth-tech company to help with the analysis at a cost of $4300.
Part of the reason for the change is the original wastewater treatment design did not envision the amount of phosphorus removal currently needed.

After this new treatment, the discharge should be diverted into the Sugar River.
