MADISON -– Republicans who control the Wisconsin Assembly are considering passing a bill on their final day in session that would address the state’s $527 million shortfall.

What would be in that bill isn’t known. Republican lawmakers were discussing it in a closed meeting late Wednesday.

Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle unveiled his plan to deal with it on Monday. While he asked lawmakers to solve the problem quickly, it wasn’t expected to be debated until a special session starts later.

Even if Republicans pass their own plan, Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker says the Senate won’t debate it until after the bipartisan budget committee gets a chance to review it.

Doyle’s plan relies on a tax on hospital profits that Republicans have opposed.
