Snow-day makeup plan discussed
JANESVILLE—The Janesville public schools administration is now looking at April 12 and May 3—both Saturdays—for snow-day makeup days.
A plan presented to the school board tonight still needs approval from the teachers union. The union contract forbids holding school on Saturdays, so the administration is seeking a waiver of the contract provision.
High school and middle school students would have to attend for only two hours on those Saturdays. Elementary school students would attend for five and one-half hours.
The difference is because the elementary schools need to make up more hours in order to comply with state law.

This is so stupid, why waste our time and money for just two hrs that's not making up school days missed, that two hrs of teaching, two hrs of buses running on saturdays. No country buses the kids won't get to school, parents do work on saturdays. Come on people think about this, it's not worth the pain. Add 15 mins to each day to make up the 4 hrs. Why not take one day away from spring break. THINK PEOPLE. Just got to make things worse then there are.

If school is such a waste of time for all of you people, it seems to follow that it is a waste of taxpayers' money to offer it to you.

Hate to say it but you will be lucky to have 30% actually attend school on a Saturday. No one will waste time sending their kids especially older kids. So it will be a big waste of time.

I think alot of you people on here commenting should also attend school to learn how to spell!! You obviously have nothing better to do than complain about all the things you disagree with!! It's really sort of entertaining to read comments you post and at the same time feel sorry for you poor souls that have nothing better to do with your time.

Everyone should be sure to read the other article posted in regards to the make up days. In addition to the dates, it tells the times of the make up.
Students taking the ACT test will probably be coded as an activity so it will not count towards their 10 days. My understanding is there is also a doubleheader game on May 3rd and those studensts would be coded as acitivity as well.
What a way to boost the attendance because students that are activitied will be counted as present.
If you are close to your 10 days, it's not like they are going to take you to court or do a truancy petition if you just barely go over.
It is what it is, so everyone should just deal with it. I'm not happy either. I feel Dr. Evert was severely lacking judgement for not having us make up one day on Feb. 22nd.

Uh go to school for 2 hours. Pretty lame. Still wont send my kids on that day. At some point someone should consider legal action to block having school on non publisized days. There should be more accountability in the planning process. It's Wisconsin People! There will be snow days and you need to account for it.. Oh yeah, maybe they were listening to the lies about global warming.....

You need to remember that some of the same articles we read here end up as a portion of a WCLO broadcast. This might be an example (just guessing).

It would be nice if the district would finalize some dates. This is the 2nd or 3rd different series of dates that have been communicated. Some who go to school or work in the district have weekend jobs and would like to know so they can make plans.
Bad planning on your part doesn't make an automatic emergency on my part...

I am wondering what the purpose is of these very short blog postings by the Gazette. The blog above was posted at 10 p.m. on 3/11, and today (3/12) we have a much more informative article, that answers a lot of questions.

ame i have several reasons why they have missed school one i have one child who has health issues two single mom three children. three work 12 hour shifts overnight and have to drive from out of town to get home to take them to school and wasn't so easy with the bad weather this year. Overslept a few times because I am human. if they are more then 20 mins late it counts as a half day which in turn counts as one of the 10 days for the year. That doesn't count the occasionally cold etc that doesn't require a doctor visit. So the reason I am worried is I dont' want to go over the 10 days. And for missing as much as they have their grades are at a B average and higher so I must be doing something right.

Two of my three kids are in a wedding on the 12th. So if the kids don't go does that count as one of the 10 parent excused abscences for the year? Doesn't seem fair, but not much about this seems fair.

Just in case the school board is unaware, ACT testing is scheduled at Craig and Parker both days. U-Rock is also conducting the testing that April 12th. How many high schoolers will not be in school on day. I know mine wont !

"Whats the point of going to school for 2 hours?"
To satisfy the law.
.
But, here's a suggestion for the subject to be taught on those make up days.
Civics 101. Lobbying. As in, teach the kids how to teach their parents how to lobby their legislators to change the law to eliminate the days requirement to satisfy the hours requirement to eliminate these silly situations which will eliminate these silly unending posts.
