Final layoff notices approved for 34 Appleton educators
APPLETON, Wis. (AP) – The Appleton Board of Education has approved final layoff notices for 34 educators.
The move came Monday after the board voted in December to cut spending by $3.2 million and raise $800,000 in new revenue to offset an anticipated $4 million budget shortfall for the next school year.
Appleton North High School Principal Barry O’Connor said Appleton had not laid teachers off in a decade and he hated to see it happen now.
“We’re losing a number of young staff – phy ed, science, social studies, communication arts, business/marketing, world language – and others may get knocked out of the building” because of seniority, he said.
O’Connor said most of the laid-off teachers were hired last spring or summer.
Officials said 65 Appleton educators retired or resigned last year, compared with only 16 so far this year.
The 34 being laid off fill the equivalent of 24.9 full-time positions.
O’Connor said he and other administrators will write them letters of recommendation.

Lay off the teachers BUT don't touch our athletics. Music...that can go.....Art....that can go too....Drama, cut that too BUT DON'T TOUCH OUR ATHLETICS. Go ahead, lay of those teachers. Does ANY of this make sense? I didn't think so either.

Did anyone consider laying off an administrator before jumping to layoff teachers? Makes one wonder doesn't it!
