Beloit College officials are forming a plan to replace president John Burris after he announced his resignation Thursday.

College spokesman Ron Nief says the resignation was unanticipated. Burris will become the president of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, a private foundation in North Carolina. Nief says a search firm will conduct an international search for candidates, since Beloit College students come from nearly 50 different countries and the college does not want to limit its search in any way. An interim president will take the helm for about a year.

Burris' resignation takes effect June 30th.
