Two bills headed to the state Assembly could ease jail overcrowding in Rock County.

State Senator Judy Robson of Beloit says the chair of the Judiciary Committee held a hearing at Blackhawk Technical College, took a tour of the jail and spoke with the county sheriff. Robson says the bills are in response to overcrowding at jails across the state.

Both bills aim to reduce the number of people in jail on suspended drivers' licenses or licenses that have expired. Robson says federal drug law mandates license suspension for most drug offenses.

Majority of ALL inmates in the Rock County Jail are held on probation holds. Maybe it shouldn't be so easy for probation agents to lock up their offenders on hear/say information. They eventually release them because they have no reason to hold them anyway!!
Overdue libraray books aren't the half of it. I've heard of people being arrested for not having a working smoke detector in their home!

A lot of times you are not locked up for "simple marijuana possession." First offense in most places is a forfeiture(a ticket). Plus the key word is crime. It is still against the law to possess marijuana. So as they say, If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. And that woman did not go to jail for the library book. She did not pay a fine and a warrant was issued. The same way if you don't pay any ticket or fail to appear for a court date. You would have a warrant issued for your arrest. This is the way our justice system works. If you don't like it contact your state representative and ask them to change it. It would work a lot better than complaining about it on a local newspaper website.

how about not locking people up for simple marijuana possession, which like the overdue books is a victimless crime:)
