Madison alderman to propose a lower Lake Mendota
MADISON--With Madison lakes at near record-levels, a Madison alderman plans to introduce a resolution before the City Council on Tuesday that would ask the Department of Natural Resources to review lake levels and possibly approve permanently lowering the level of Lake Mendota.
Proponents of dropping the lake level argue that more frequent floods will continue to pose threats to a number of locations, including Tenney Park and Cherokee Marsh and that recent high water may be only a small taste of what is to come.
Earlier this spring, Larry Nelson, city engineer for Madison, proposed lowering Lake Mendota by as much as a foot to provide more room for floodwaters.

I’ve always thought it is better to be proactive rather than reactive. If lowering the lake doesn’t result in any major environmental concerns, then I think it’s a wise move. It seems apparent that our weather has become more severe over the last year. Granted, it may not be a long term trend, but in case it is we should be prepared.
