MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Lake Monona beaches are closed following a car accident that resulted in a sewage overflow.

Monona police say a driver apparently fell asleep and hit an electric utility pole about 12:30 a.m. Friday. The pole fell, taking a second pole with it. That cut off power to a nearby sewage pumping station.

Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District director Jon Schellpfeffer says the pumping station was out for more than four hours, causing a sewage backup into area waterways.

Schellpfeffer says several hundred thousand gallons of sewage may have been released.

Madison-Dane County Health Department spokesman John Hausbeck says bacteria in the water could keep the beaches closed for about a week.

Monona Police Chief Walter Ostrenga says the driver was treated and released from a hospital. ——— Information from: Wisconsin State Journal, http://www.madison.com/wsj
