Artificial turf approved for UW-Whitewater’s baseball diamond
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will be the first UW campus to have a baseball diamond with an artificial surface now that the State Building Commission on Wednesday approved $1.74 million to change Prucha Field to synthetic turf.
Synthetic turf’s biggest advantage over grass is its ability to shed rain and it is ready for use earlier than grass after the snow melts in spring. Although the synthetic surface will get a lot more use than grass, it will be cheaper to maintain, said Paul Plinske, UW-Whitewater athletic director.
Clay will remain only on the pitcher’s mound and the home plate area.
Prucha Field also will undergo other major upgrades to its lighting, bullpens, concessions, fencing and restrooms in conjunction with the new turf.

With the proposed 5.5% tuition increase for all colleges in the UW system, it is hard for me to believe that anybody would get excited about spending millions on artifical "grass".

The value of DIII sports has nothing to do with preparing to compete professionally. In fact it's far from it. Like it or not DIII sports represent the purest form of student/athletes in collegiate athletics. Nobody is on scholarship, everyone is a full time student and only a very, very small number will ever go on to play professionally. They play because they love their sport and they love to compete. At the same time they're in the classroom earning degrees.
If some had any idea of the committment and hard work it takes to be involved in a nationally prominent DIII program, such as Whitewater's football program for instance, and at the same time be working towards a degree they might feel differently about it.

cocktail your probably mad at D3 sports in general becaue you could never make a D3 roster.... Thats what I'm thinking.... The Stanley kid from a couple years ago is on the Rams roster...... Look at Greg Rhienhard the pitcher who was on the UW-W world series winning team a couple of years ago, he got a pro contract.

DIII sports a waste of money? Yeah, real waste that these kids get to keep playing a sport they're passionate about. You DO know that UW Whitewater has produced players that got drafted by professional teams, right? And you DO know that these "waste of money" sports provide lots of revenue for the school, right? And to top it off, us college kids really enjoy watching, and take a lot of pride in our athletes. Just checking if you knew...

The Kachel family is a huge factor no doubt... I think in these latest improvements, (fieid turf to Warhawak stadium included) the Kachels are donating $1.5 Million towards it...

UWW sports have been amazing for a while now. The baseball team in particular gets far less credit than they deserve. Congrats on placing 3rd at the DIII World Series, boys. Keep rockin' it.
