Rock Aqua Jays unable to host national ski show tournament

By Shelly Birkelo ( Contact )   June 25, 2008 - 9:47 a.m.

The Rock Aqua Jays board decided Tuesday night during a special meeting the club will be unable to host the national water ski show tournament Aug. 8-10.

The event will go on but in a different location, said Joel Shapiro, club president.

The Aqua Jays were to host the tournament at its home site on the Rock River at Traxler Park in downtown Janesville.

“Looking at the charts for the river it appears as if though it will not be at an acceptable level until the week of the tournament and that’s assuming there will be a relatively dry weather pattern from now until then,” Shapiro said.

Shapiro had already made phone calls to Janesville City Council President Amy Loasching, city parks director Tom Presny and Janesville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Christine Rebout.

Not having the tournament in Janesville could result in a $2 million loss in tourism here, according to Shapiro.

Have they contacted anyone in Lake Geneva? We're in much better shape than others.

The same problems exist at Riverside too. On the upside, the wading pool is full of water!
Just happens to be flooded river water, so stay out of it.

ihavealife, yes, Traxler is closed for the season. The buildings need to be decontaminated, and the grass -- if it isn't covered in sludge -- needs to have time to recover. The first public event in Traxler will probably be Veterans Day in November.

I heard the other day that traxler and riverside parks would be closed for the summer because the ground needs that long too dry out.Does anyone know if that's true ?

People may think that since the water levels might be down why not take advantage of the revenue. But no one knows what is actually hiding under the waters surface. There is so much debris that could cause costly damage to all the boats & equipment, as well as the potential of serious injury to any one of the skiers. We the fans will miss the competition, but we would rather have EVERYONE SAFE.

I want to clarify that the Divison I National Water Ski Show Tournament is not canceled. Rather, our organization concluded that we are not able to host it because of flooding. The National Show Ski Association will determine an alternate location for the event.
