Tollway glitch punishes Wis. drivers
As if Illinois road construction and traffic jams weren’t enough of a hassle, now comes a computer glitch that targets, of course, only Wisconsin drivers.
Hundreds, and possibly thousands, of Wisconsin motorists might have been wrongly fined - some for thousands of dollars - by the Illinois tollway because of a mistake in the I-Pass system that electronically deducts tolls from credit card accounts set up by drivers.
And even when the problem was resolved and the fines were cleared, some I-Pass holders said they were charged the cash price on tolls instead of the half-price discount they signed up for when they purchased the devices.
Illinois Tollway spokeswoman Joelle McGinnis said Friday that the problem was fixed this month. She did not know how many Wisconsin drivers were affected. But based on calls to the Wisconsin Bureau of Vehicle Services, the number could be substantial.
The glitch - a semantics issue - stemmed from an oversight in computer programming when the Illinois Tollway consolidated its violation system in 2007, according to McGinnis.
I-Pass, which started in 1993, lets drivers electronically pay tolls using special transponders attached to the windshields of their cars, speeding traffic through special lanes along the tollway.

Hannah - it's pretty easy to decipher the Chicagoans from the tourists on Michigan Ave. Also, I did not specifically say all tourists are from Wisconsin. Read it again - I said many tourists, including cheeseheads, do not know how to navigate crosswalks. Somehow I think that there are some chedderheads among the throngs of tourists down here. The point is that no matter where one goes, there will always be others that having annoying behaviors. Try not to take it so personally.

I understand how you cheesheads despise how us Illinois residents drive - trust me - we are too aggressive. However, as a Chicago native, what is just as annoying are the tourists' lack of ability to fully understand how a walk signal works on a very busy street such as State or Michigan. Granted we drive too fast; however, you tourists, cheeseheads too, need to learn how to navigate the walk/don't walk signals. Jaywalking is fine in a slower paced city, for example Janesville, but it does not work in a fast paced city like Chicago. We may have lead in our feet, but you also have lead in your butts!

I don't believe they are doing this yet in IL, but in some other states with their IPASS equivalent, if the drive-time between two toll booths is not long enough, you are mailed a speeding ticket! (Finally, a reason why we had to learn 'distance equals rate times time'!). This whole thing is too Orwellian for me. It's only a matter of time before the 'telescreens' from Orwell's "1984" will be in our livingroom. And when that happens, there will still be the morons who say, "well, I don't mind--I have nothing to hide. And besides, if you're not doing anything illegal, what's wrong with having the government in your home?"

jvldude, I agree with you on the driving part, people from ILL. drive like they're nuts and in such a hurry to go..nowhere. Living in northern WI., A LOT of fibs have cottages up here and the people up here have such high prices on waterfront property because they know the ILL. people will pay them. Not many that actually live/work here can afford the prices. And they act snooty because they think we're a bunch of "rednecks".

I don't drive into Illinois often enough for an IPass to make any sense and thankfully enough motorists are using them that going through the pay toll booth really doesn't take that long anymore. I did recently receive a ticket for an expired license plate from the Chicago Department of Revenue when my vehicle was photographed at an intersection on Sheridan Drive. However it was forgiven on appeal because I had actually renewed but had not received the new sticker. The idea that there is someone, somewhere who sits and looks at photographs of stopped cars for vehicle registration lapses kind of blew me away. And what business is the registration of my Wisconsin vehicle to the Chicago Department of Revenue anyway?

Also, it wasn't just WI IPASS holders who got bogus violations letters, IL resident IPASS holders got them too...

I got my letter in May of this year for "violations" in June '07. I called the number in the letter and it only took 30 minutes on hold to get someone on the line to fix it... Also, just FYI - in the construction zones which are 45mph , you may find one of their photo speed enforcement vans setup - 1st offense: $375 ticket MAILED to your house with MANDATORY court appearance, 2nd offense: $1000 AND 90 day DL suspension.

mrmaro and others who have to post deragotory comments about Illinois - If Illinois is so bad why don't you just stay out of the state? If you can't stay out please go to Menards and learn to navigate the round-a-bout before driving south.

I actually spend more than $2 in Janesville when I stop by. Your sales tax is lower. I guess I'll drive further north to shop at the Madison malls. Computer glitches happen. I guess most of the comments I'm ready show how some of you truly are. Mean just plain mean. Your mean to each other and everyone. Alot of people have been coming to this site because of the recent GM news. I guess a few of you are trying your hardest to give an impression of the Janesville people.

Imagine my surprise when I opened the letter, only to see $1,850.00 worth of 'fines' ($20.00 fine for each offense, on top of the 50 cent toll), along with an impressive picture of my license plate. Like 'darius', though, my experience with them was positive. I did not understand this, however: I got my letter in May for alleged violations in October, '07. Nice! Since I traveled the Interstate 3-4 times per week, I thought I would have to see about a third mortgage (my second mortgage going to pay for gas...) when they caught up from November to May. Might have been nice if they had offered an apology, or even an acknowlegment that it was their fault.....Oh my God!!...What a flippin nightmare to have done that!!!

glitches happen. Get over it. It's not due to a specific state, it's not because somebody wants to rob someone else. Anything man-made is sure to fail.
By the way, I'm from Wisconsin.

I think it's about time Wisconsin woke up and took a cue from the FIB's (Financially Intuitive Badger-wannabes) and converted our interstate roads to open tolling.
Time to spread the wealth around.

A friend had this happen, all she did was call the number and they fixed it - without a hassle. The call was over in less that two minutes, and the problem fixed.
If this happened to you, call them.

Anonomouse,
What makes you think that the responses to the tollway problems were written by Janesville people? You don't know that. You're assuming!

Illinois is where your tourist dollars come from. I'm going to make sure I don't stop off and spend any money in Janesville as long as people are posting this drivel. Illinois didn't do this intentionally.

I had this happen to me. They sent me a readout of the toll violations and the location of each violation. Needless to say, I wasn't amused when I saw it, however, I called the number provided and TACTFULLY discussed the issue with a representative. They were very cordial and waved all the fines. I wouldn't recommend calling them all loaded with "venom"! You'd be surprised how compliant people can be when using rational thinking. Hope this helps.

There IS a reason we refer to it as the Illinois State Extortion System... now it's just exceeding our expectations.
