MADISON -- Most of Wisconsin’s Interstate highways and major state highways are clear for traffic, the Department of Transportation reported. Travel times may still be reduced, however.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 39 near Portage in Columbia County opened at noon today. The posted speed limit through the area is 55 mph.

Interstate 94 at Johnson Creek is open to one lane in each direction. The DOT still encourages travelers to use alternate routes if possible because of reduced speeds and probable backups during peak periods.

The DOT advises tourists traveling north out of Illinois to use I-90/39 from Beloit and I-43 from Milwaukee to reach their destinations.

Highway 33 between Baraboo and I-39 is also open. Highway 33 between I-39 and Portage is closed indefinitely.

The Cascade Mountain Road and Highway 33 interchange ramps in Columbia County are open.

Many county and local roads remain closed.
