Boy injured in May 10 fire could come home soon
Joey Ashmore, who was injured in a fire that killed his 7-year-old brother, Derek R.J. Mattingly on May 10, could come home as soon as June 27.
Doctors at the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Cincinnati first want to make sure the 2-year-old can walk before he comes home, according to his grandmother Denell Taylor (Ashmore).
Benefits for the family are planned in Beloit and Janesville on June 28.
Last month's fire, at 327 N. Palm St., was accidentally started by another brother, Owen A.P. Ashmore, 4, according to Janesville police.
Owen, his father, Scott A. Ashmore, 23, and two people in an upstairs apartment--including Derek's grandmother, Laurie R. Ginter--escaped without injury. Joey and Derek were in the same bedroom when two Janesville firefighters found them.
