National Guard coming to Rock County
JANESVILLE--This morning, Sheriff Bob Spoden asked emergency management Director Shirley Connors to request help from the Wisconsin National Guard.
The request was approved soon after it was made, according to sheriff’s office officials.
Sheriff’s deputies have been staffing security checkpoints to limit public access to flooded areas, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Deputies have been making frequent patrols of flooded areas.
Guard members will free deputies from patrolling the checkpoints and reduce deputies’ overtime, Spoden told the Gazette this morning.
Unarmed Guard members will work under the sheriff’s authority. Sworn sheriff’s personnel will continue to take necessary enforcement action, according to the press release.

Obey the law right if people did we would not need the guard, and by my sources the janesville unit is in jefferson, helping out. So all it take's is some one getting shot to wake all you up that the guard should be armed. So to all the guard units helping out GOOD JOB AND THANK YOU.

My, snarly, you certainly live up to your nick.
.
According to my sources, a Guard unit that has been serving in other flooded locations has already arrived in the county this evening. I don't know where they're based but at least one of them is in law enforcement in Milwaukee. They have humvees and at least one odd contraption my sources could not describe -- perhaps a tank rescue vehicle. I don't suppose it will get much use here, but you never know.
.
I did consider noting that it's possible the Janesville unit might not even be activated. The decision is up to the state emergency management people.
.
shutupandfish: The actual situation has varied by state, but generally only 1/5 or so of a state's Guard have been overseas at any given time and usually much less. According to the website, just 360 members of the Wisconsin National Guard are currently on active duty, out of 10,000 troops. Most deployments have been of smaller specialized units such as military police, bomb disposal, or judge advocates and civil affairs experts.

Dear janesvillean yes you are right there is not a riot but I have seen the scum of janesville come out when there is a chance to steal, rob, take advantage of good people and that is why they need to be armed.

The National Guard will be under their own command and will have their own rules of engagement, assuming they are armed, which may not be the case.
.
After Katrina when the Guard reached New Orleans they were being driven in with weapons ready, expecting a negative response. The general in charge ordered them to stand down -- "This isn't Baghdad, it's an American city!"
.
Anyway, they aren't being called out to quell a riot.

I wonder what the excuse for floods was before the global warming hoax.

They should arm the National guard with guns to help out because if they are working under the sheriff they should be able to carry a gun what happens IF some one has a gun to hurt some one are they suppose to say stop or i will call some one give me a break let them have a gun to protect the janesville residents and they are more trained with weapons than the sheriff and jpd is let them do their job and protect.

I agree with Unidentified, it's obvious our federal and state agencies are learning from past mistakes and implemented better processes to handle these disasters.

This is good news. I'm impressed with the way local, state, and federal (FEMA) officials have handled this dynamic situation. There are times when our officials let us down and times when they really go to work for the people. Granted, there are those who will still need assistance once the waters recede, but for now action is being taken that may save lives.

I think we should use all the National Guards at this time-I know the Janesville National Guards would more than be be happy to help. It should not be about the money they have to pay but the safety for the Janesville residents

I am glad you won't let your kids around there. Sunday afternoon I was driving on Main st and noticed 2 small kids in the water. By the time I turned around they were very close to the river. I went after them with water passed my knees. The girl did not know how to swim. I called the JPD they came, I was dissapointed, they just sent the kids home, they should have taken them home and talked to the parents. This is very dangerous, and is not safe to anyone let alone 2 small children.

Thank goodness. Keep the kids out and away from the water. I feel sorry for the police it is like people wait until they leave and then go at it again down here. I live across from the river and I won't even let my kids over there.
