Janesville flooding update
JANESVILLE -- The prediction of when the Rock River will crest continues to change.
This afternoon, the estimated crest at the Afton gauge south of Janesville remains at 13.8 feet, but now officials say it won’t reach that mark until early Sunday morning.
Currently, the river is at 13.38 feet.
Damage estimates have also increased, from $25 million this morning to $38.7 million this afternoon. The addition of Degussa Chemical’s estimate of $15 million in damage boosted the number.
Also, the Hedberg Library remains open despite water seeping into an elevator shaft. The elevator was brought up from the lower level and power cut to the shaft to avoid damage to electrical equipment, city officials said.

I heard the city now charges 39 cents per sandbag. Is that true?

Commenting on the efforts in Newville...what I saw this afternoon was amazing. People from all over--those whose homes were in danger or already gone, those who live in town or elsewhere out of harms' way, students, the RECAP workers, and other people who saw the operation and just wanted to help--all working together so efficiently. There weren't many words as we were either filling or tying or loading sandbags, but there didn't need to be. You just kept going, finally stopping long after the aches and pains had kicked in, wanting to push yourself a bit more. Everyone deserves a hearty pat on the back for pitching in!! Also, a huge thank you to the American Red Cross Disaster Response...having food and beverages for the volunteers was much appreciated!!

I've been helping make sandbags. I wanted to thank the RECAP workers and other jail people that helped on Monday in Newville. I also wanted to say a thanks to the "missionary" camp kids and staff from Minn. that helped. They are camped near Kegonsa (I heard) and heard the call for help so they came. I also loved that sandbag machine.

I think they are just giving all of us the information that they receive, so that we have a good idea of what's going on. Yes, the predictions change every day... but it allows us to also draw our own conclusions.

Get a life ChsMkr. I am sure that predicting flood levels is not a job. It is just that, a prediction. Maybe you can take over, and we can pick apart your science.

I predict that these guys will give you a new predicted day and depth every day until the river stops dropping. Nice work, if you can get it.
