Officials: Raw sewage in flood water
JANESVILLE--Officials are urging residents to stay out of the water because of raw sewage and other harmful chemicals that are being dumped in the river.
Fort Atkinson and Jefferson have bypassed their wastewater treatment plants in an effort to save the overwhelmed facilities and are dumping raw sewage into the Rock River, Janesville City Manager Steve Sheiffer said.
Sheiffer’s comments were eye-opening to some residents in the Mole & Sadler’s subdivision this morning when he held a neighborhood meeting there.
“That water is full of sewage. Seriously full of sewage,” Sheiffer said, pointing to the flooded river behind him.
City officials tested the flood water, which showed it full of E. coli, a harmful bacteria, and chloroform, both of which will make people ill, he said.
Skin that comes in contact with the flood water should be scrubbed with soap and clean water.

I think it is very irresponsible for Fort Atkinson and Jefferson to have bypassed their wastewater treatment plants, thereby letting raw sewage flow into the river. Not only are they adding to the pollution already present in the river, but they are causing a health hazard and exposing neighbor communities to disease.

I heard this morning at work that a body was found beneath the Memorial Bridge last night. It's sad that people are even getting into the water after being warned repeatedly. It's one thing to look in awe at the Rock River and notice its strong current ripping through down town and swallowing parks. It's another thing to go swimming around in it.

With all these reports of treatment plants at full capacity, how is Janesville's treatment plant doing? It's going to be a heck of a cleanup in the parks with all this stuff in the water. I hope they have a backup plan for the 4th of July, I don't think Traxler is going to be suitable for anything at that time. There won't even be any grass down there after being underwater for a week.

What are the possibilities of this stuff getting into our drinking water?

I saw no less than 20 people wading in the water at centerway and north main yesterday.
Why aren't signs being posted around the floodwaters regarding the raw sewage and e.coli?
Next thing you know we'll have an outbreak of cryptosporidium, staph, and e.coli thanks to all the lookieloo muckwaders.

I understand the emergency situation but could the not have found a different solution rather the putting thousands at risk? Kids dont look at the risks when playing in high water I know as a kid I didnt. THEY NEED TO POST SIGNS ALL ALONG ROCK RIVER AS SOME PEOPLE DONT GET THE GAZETTE OR HAVE PCs FOR THIS INFORMATION. And It is sad to continue to polute our rivers. E- coli is not a laughing matter LET THE WHOLE COMMUNITY KNOW!!!!!

So many adults were letting there kids play in that sewer water even the parents were playing in it I had the common sense not to play in the water. Has anyone ever thought that the water you were playing in was coming from the sewer? when you get sick don't come whining to anyone it was your own fault you have to deal with the consequinces.

So many people downtown playing in the street with that dirty water. knew from past floods in my life that what appears to be fun isn't so fun once you learn what is in the water. not only is there human waste there think of all the cow sh** that was washed out of the fields and into the mighty Rock. the only thing that is going to like that stuff is the carp!!!! and to think they netted a whole bunch of them just last month. wonder where the carp went they caught?? dinner anyone?? oh one thing the artical did not mention there are parasites (spelling don't count) in there too i'll stick to sandbagging.
