More sandbags on the way

By Sid Schwartz ( Contact )   June 13, 2008 - 3:47 p.m.

Many of the sandbag distribution sites in Rock County ran out of sandbags Friday, but more were on the way, Rock County officials said.

An estimated 60,000 sandbags had been distributed to residents, and 40,000 more were on the way from La Crescent, Minn., said Cmdr. Tom Gehl of the Rock County Sheriff's Office.

"We're just getting them as quick as we can get them. As you can well imagine, there's a demand for these all over the Midwest," Gehl said.

He estimated that a truck carrying sandbags would arrive in Rock County late Friday afternoon or early Friday evening. The sandbags were to be given to municipalities, who would make them available to residents.

People needing sandbags should go to the distribution sites throughout the county. Gehl said people should not go to the Rock County Health Care Center. No sandbags are being distributed there, he said.

The only Janesville sandbag distribution site is the City Services Center, 2200 Highway 51 North.

Suggest removal

I just "toured" some of the low-lying points. The city, schools, and utilities have been working to get their facilities protected, but only some of the businesses, and hardly any residences. I wouldn't think this is something you would want to wait and see on.
