Janesville prepares for river crest
JANESVILLE--The city of Janesville evacuated Thursday 14 homes along the Rock River in the Mole-Sadler neighborhood.
Engineers will start work immediately to protect Hedburg Public Library, which is along a part of the river wall officials expect will be breached, City Manager Steve Sheiffer said.
Crews worked overnight Thursday to fill 13,000 sandbags for residents’ use. And the city will open a Flooding Information Center and hot line for residents’ questions.
This information and more was passed on to city council members at an emergency meeting Thursday night. The Rock River is expected Tuesday to crest at at “unprecidented” 13.3 feet, Sheiffer said.
Details will be available in the Janesville Gazette and on this Web site Friday.

Mole-Sadler... Wow. I've lived here all my life ...some twenty-odd years and I had never heard those old houses called that.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Mole-Sadler Division.

This is a government Conspiracy. Has any one noticed how George W is conveniently out of the country distracting us with his calls for diplomacy?

How did I do Localboy?

The City of Janesville defiantly has had plenty of time to prepare. Unlike our unlucky friends to the north.

Can we all find some way to blame these floods on George W? That is what most of you do.

I've lived in Janesville for 20 years, but have no idea where the Mole-Sadler neighborhood is.

Well, servers can always be moved up, if they're on the floor. Cables (and that includes power!) can't always be moved, though. This sort of thing (a disaster with advance warning) is always an opportune moment to ensure that your offsite backup system is working!

If the lower level of the library does flood, there will be some significant damage done. The server farm for the computer system is located in the basement area, but it is quite a ways in from the doors, so maybe it will be ok.
Water is also a very persistent problem maker. It will always find that one weak spot and get in. Hopefully the damage along the river will be minimal and no one will get hurt. My thoughts are with anyone dealing with this.

Well, information about the water volume upstream has changed. The Marshall Apartments are actually up a slight rise, but the lower level of the library is barely above the top of the river wall, and from what I saw tonight the river could easily top the wall.
.
It really wouldn't have made any difference. They'll still be able to sandbag, which is about all they really can do (besides getting stuff off the floor downstairs). Whatever happens I'd say the carpets will need replacing at a minimum.
.
The thing about floods is that they're usually disasters in slow motion. (Lake Delton or dam bursts being an exception.) You generally have several days to prepare for the higher water, but slowing how much water gets into buildings is mostly all you can hope for.

Lasnight Operations Director John Whitcomb said: "it does not appear the water would threaten the library building itself.
The wall gets about a foot higher near the library and would appear to be able to protect the Marshall Apartments." and now tonight.. "Engineers will start work immediately to protect Hedburg Public Library, which is along a part of the river wall officials expect will be breached, City Manager Steve Sheiffer said" Maybe the engineers should have looked at it yesterday.
