House fire injures Janesville woman
A Janesville woman was listed in good condition this morning after an early morning fire today in her south side home.
Marlene L. Ciano, 55, was taken to Mercy Hospital by Janesville Fire Department paramedics.
Firefighters believe Ciano fell asleep while smoking on her couch.
Ciano called 911 at 1:02 a.m., “but then the phone went dead,” said Lt. David Sheen of the Janesville Fire Department.
Although a passerby reported seeing fire, firefighters did not find an active fire upon their arrival but discovered extensive smoke and heat damage throughout the small, one-story house with a basement.
“Everything in that house was melted down,” Sheen said.
A Janesville Police officer was first to arrive on scene and found an injured Ciano, who lives alone, outside and out back of her home, at 1804 Beloit Ave., Sheen said.
“The officer thought she was burned and suffering from smoke inhalation,’’ Sheen said.
Cigarettes were found on Ciano’s coffee table where the couch was,” Sheen said.
Content and structure damage were estimated at $25,000 each for a total loss of $50,000, Sheen said. The house was valued at $62,000.
