WINONA, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Transportation is closing the Highway 43 bridge over the Mississippi River at Winona after an inspection of its gusset plates — the parts suspected in last year’s Minneapolis bridge collapse.

MnDOT officials called an 8 p.m. Tuesday news conference at Winona City Hall so that MnDOT commissioner Tom Sorel and State Bridge Engineer Dan Dorgan could provide details.

The Highway 43 bridge was built in 1941. It is the only Mississippi River crossing at Winona.
