bennetonf1 Do you really think that China and India are not contributing greatly to global pollution with their industries? Do you sleep well at night knowing that China is drilling fifty miles off the coast of Florida?

I'm with Long Time Gone. I don't want to witness the death of this plant for the rest of my life. It hurts enough already.

This is a time when the UAW, the governor, our city manager, ALL our workers, etc. to market the Janesville plant to GM for new product lines. Show GM what opportunities are possible here. Surely the local quality level has been good and the workers have good records right?????
Come on people, even with this really not great news, there is opportunity to make it positive. Attitudes.., please... There is 18 precious months here to plan, find solutions, make something good happen out of all this. Who could buy the plant??, What else could be manufactured there?? Time to start thinking, be proactive, not reactive.

jonwayne, I wonder if our taxes will go up because property values will fall through the floor and we still have a school renovation project to pay for and we will have an increase in demands from places like ECHO, United Way, Toy Drives, etc because there will not be GM giving any money to those organizations? Think about that one!

I'm with control, let's suck every last drop of oil out of the ground, chuck those goofy CAFE milage mandates, ban all foreign autos, and have everyone buy a GM SUV. And while we're at it lets do away with pollution control so we can lure our manufacturing jobs back from India and China. (sarcasm off)
*
It's the ignorance of posters like control that got us in this position in the first place.

Thank you Nero -
*
The DNR gets $80 million a year for the Stewardship Fund, to buy sensitive wildlife areas.
*
Perhaps Rep. Mike Sheridan can pass a bill to take 10% of that - $8 million - to hire laborers for the demolition of GM.
*
And, with all the scrap metal in that place, imagine what the UAW can recoup to add to the health care kitty.
*
To my mind, if GM is walking away from Janesville, then they walk away without so much as a desk pen & pencil set.

Wonder is our taxes will go down if we don't have to give Gm millions and millions of dollars to not leave the state ?

Well said, Long_Time_Gone. That's a solid plan if plant is to close forever. No point in letting the facility fall into decay one day at a time over the next 50 years. Just be done with it.

Wouldn't Doyle have been better served to say, "It is over. We can't subsidize GM vehicles by giving them the state's blank check? If Janesville has a shot at keeping GM, we will, but we don't..."
*
To say anything else is simply cruel to the autoworker.
*
Doyle should have announced that the state will provide X amount to Janesville to hire the laborers neccessary to completely demolish the plant. Knock it right down to the ground.
*
Then, Paul Ryan should convince the geniuses in DC to forego any and all environmental claims against GM - no slapping the plant with a Superfund status.
*
GM gives-up title to the real estate in exchange for no EPA liability, GM laborers have a job during the 3-5 years it will take to demolish the factory and plant grass seed, Janesville has a huge and marketable piece of real estate, and the pain of seeing those smoke stacks rust to the ground for the next 20+ years are gone.

RUnuts is a perfect example of the blind devotion. Clinton did nothing to solve the looming energy crisis (remember the 70s?)neither has many many years of Democrats controlling Congress. RUnuts didn't take on my points he justs following the dems talking points. The prosperity he mentions resulted from a lot things that Clinton did nothing to create but could just enjoy.

Well it is indeed sad to see that so many people will be effected by the closing of G.M. The true trickle down affect wont be felt for some time yet. Two years so I say instead of dwelling on it the people of this community and nearby communities need to make calls to our congressmen and women and let them know just how we feel with the sad state of the economy and not only our jobs are in jeopardy but so are theres if they dont quit taking the handouts and start to do something to help the people that elected them instead of just helping thereselves.

Give me a break, Do you remember the Clinton years? Peace, Prosperity, Interns! Those were the days! Zero budget Deficit. Bush and his ignorance have endangered all we know and our grandchildrens futures as well. GM is just as arrogant as Bush and now will suffer the consequences.

The union's blind devotion to the Democtrats is counter productive.Democrats put this plant out of business with their refusal to use the billions of gallons of oil under our own soil and fuel efficiency standrds that in pratice favored the foreign auto makers. All to "protect" the environment instead of your jobs. The proof is the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act currently before the Senate. Wise up union members before they kill all manufacturing in the U.S.

Unless he's going to make a statement that he'll work to convince GM to stay, I don't quite see the point of his visit. If there's a way Gov. Doyle can pull off keeping GM open past 2010, that'd be great, but there's only so much a politician can do.

schwoogie: That must not get old for you? Same exact post on various blogs.
I'm curious as to what Doyle is going to say. He's got about a year and a half to convince GM to do something with the Janesville plant other than demolish it. I fear Janesville will make another useless park out of the location and raise our taxes to pay for it. The question remains; How much do we have to give GM to stay and will it be worth it?
