4 years in prison for highway death
JANESVILLE
Jason L. Huff was sentenced to four years in prison this morning for leaving the scene of an accident that killed Cameron Kraay in April 2007.
Judge Michael Byron also ordered that Huff must serve six years of extended supervision upon his release from prison. Huff is eligible for programs to shorten his prison sentence, but if he is released early from the four-year sentence, he will serve the remainder of his prison time under extended supervision.
Kraay, an Edgerton resident, was 38 when Huff, 31, also of Edgerton, hit him with his truck as Kraay walked along the side of Highway 59 between Newville and Edgerton.
Both men had been at the annual “break in the weather” party in Newville, but not together. Kraay had not been drinking.
Huff originally was charged with homicide by drunken driving as well hit and run from a fatal accident. But the prosecution dropped that charge in exchange for Huff’s guilty plea to the hit and run.
Assistant district attorney Kate Buker told Byron on Tuesday that the homicide charge should not be read into Huff’s record because the prosecution could not prove the charge because of the amount time that passed between Kraay’s death and Huff’s arrest.
The accident happened around midnight April 14, 2007. Huff was arrested later in the day April 15.

You should try to get your story right. He was drunk, he was drunk when they picked him up. The wife of Cameron even said she wanted 5-7 years. He got 4 and LOTS of years probation. And yes he created the problem. BUT people make mistakes. All i could wish for is for you or your family to make a mistake and then you can see how it is. Which if you know all this about jason then you must be from Edgerton and that means you probably do the same thing. And Jason knows he did wrong. but he is losing 4 years of his life. He even said to Mrs. Kraay that he thinks about Cameron everyday. And if your friend thinks that Jason went to the break in the weather party with intent to do what he did. They have to get their head checked.

Some statements here are so untrue. I know for a fact that he borrowed a truck he had sold to someone else to do his 'forgiveable' drunk driving and THEN lied about it. Said it wasn't him, hid in the garage or back building behind a locked door. The police went to another persons house to accuse the 'new' owner.... So that reeeeeally doesn't sound remorseful OR honest OR forthcoming OR like he was trying to be a "MAN". Now does it? Plus to say he won't do it 'again' so he fully admits he's done it before..... hmmmm with his crystal clear honest conscience going for him he outta do GREAT! That is so comforting.... it is a loss to his family HE created....HE drove drunk, HE lied, He broke the law, HE SHOULD SERVE MORE TIME.

I can't believe people think that four years of prison is a slap on the wrist. It's four years of your life in a 6 x 10 cell. Yes I know... the person that died doesn't have a life anymore... I get it... but even a year in prison is a long time. Especially when people like this Jason, who made a mistake, a horrible mistake, but none the less, a MISTAKE. It happens, that's why they call it an accident. It pretty much sucks for everyone involved, but if he's trying to voice his mistake and take the heat and try to stop others, than in my OPINION that is way more efficient than sticking him in a cell for 4 years to rot and become depressed. Some people need to get second chances even if you don't think he deserves one becuase someone you know got hit by a drunk driver, or you are related to the guy walking down the highway, at night, where a hundred drunks are leaving a party.... sometimes you have to forgive and try to help others.... even if you never forget.

Is anyone looking at the bigger picture? This is a tragedy caused by our way of life! Every weekend I see many many people taking their kids to bars or parties. They want to be "good parents" by not leaving them home. What do you expect, the kids grow up in a party atmosphere and think it is ok. Janesville bars and family functions are full of kids. Change the way you raise your kids or expect the worst.

cardtrader,
And Jason is not a coward.. he is a man who made a mistake. Tell me you have never made a mistake. yes he caused a life. But he is paying for it. And if you read Mrs. Kraays myspace blog it states she looked into jasons eyes and she could see he was sorry and he was suffering too. And that SHE got a say in his sentence.

jsvlparkergrad,
You have no idea how much i get it. my family has lost 2 people to drunk drivers. And the people who hit them got probation. Just because i dont come on a blog and advertise it dosnt mean i dont get it. but what matters is Jason Huffs family is suffering as well. Think of his Wife.. she isnt the one who did this. But she woke up that morning to a phone call saying your husband has killed someone. They were all from Edgerton and knew eachother. The Huff family from DAY ONE after this accident has been pleading with friends family. ANYONE who would listen to PLEASE dont let your friends or yourself drink and drive. Like they said to everyone. You may think it will never happen to you but it can. And you can take someones life. Jason knows he did something that was really wrong. His wife agrees that he should be punished. HE agrees that he should be punished. And he is making a difference. You can say what you want about MADD but jsvlparkergrad what are you doing to make a difference? Your family suffered just like the Kraay family but i wonder how many hours you spend speaking to highschools or to UW WI where people do this ALL the time. If you dont live in Edgerton you dont understand. This is exceptable in that town. The old mayor got a DUI. Its just not right. There has to be rules. Why would they continue to have this stupid party with a bunch of drunks after this happend. The city is making too much money thats probably why. All the tickets they get to write.. Thats the only thing i can think of because it causes more problems than anything. I have gone to the break in the weather party once when i first turned 21 i didnt drink and drive but like i said in my last message. There is over 100,000 people that come to this event and i can probably guess more than 80,000 get behind a wheel and drive. I KNOW it happens. If you have been in a situation where you have lost someone or had someone kill a person while drinking and driving dont hide behind a computer and talk bad about these people. Be proactive. We are the future!!!! And i bet you Edgerton Highschool and Middle school has not had a speaker about drunk driving after this happens. They just play the blame game.

Nothing will change until better laws are passed. I know someone that got his third in three years, refused to take the tests and only had his license suspended for three years. No jail time. He got arrested to driving on the wrong side of 94! And even though his license is suspended, he is still driving. Everytime I say "you could've killed someone" his response is "but I didn't". Ignorance and lax laws are what's causing all these drunk driving deaths. If you want to try to help, sign this petition.

drunk driving laws in this country are a joke.Just in today's paper alone there are 3 two time drunken driving arrest,1 four time and 1 five time.how do these people even have a licence or a vehicle or a auto title with plates in there name. maybe the state should be held for incompetence or accomplice in a crime As far as MADD they should be in court every time there is a multiple time offender, but it doesnt seem like they care about anything but getting the alcohol limits lowered until we are back in the roaring 20's ( that didn't work either)

The judge should have given this guy life for the one he has taken. This judge should be disbarred

i agree w/jvilleparkergrad 100%;) that we need stiffer penalties for ALL offenses. but nice post too Ty, you too are 100% rite. there are soooooooooooo many 'casual' drunk drivers anyone of us could wake up in the morning and read about someone we KNOW in the paper. if this cat REALLY stops drinking and starts speaking out against it, bravo, he should absolutely do that....after he gets out of jail for vehicular manslaugter, not hit an run.

Ty,
I don't think you get it. There are too many families out there now (mine included) that have had to deal with someone else's stupid decision to get in that car and drive drunk. We just want it to stop!
It is admirable that the drunk driver NOW goes out and talks to people about MADD. He's wasting his time, because MADD has been around for about 25 years now, and it obviously didn't make any impression on him.
MADD obviously isn't working well enough, so now is the time to make drunk drivers (whether they maim or kill anyone or not) pay a BIG penalty for the FIRST time they are caught.
There are just too many of us now that are SICK TO DEATH of losing loved ones to drunken idiots.

I know the family of Jason Huff and all you people who have been saying in 6 years he will be on here with his second and third OWI. Your so wrong. This is a guy who made a mistake!! He does not do this anymore. His family and friends are speaking out with MADD and telling their story. They are trying to make a difference after they learned the hard way. Yes i feel for the Kraay family. So does the Huff family. The Kraay family is not the only one who has lost someone. Jason has 2 kids and they will be without a father for 4 years. Jason knows he made a mistake and he is paying his time. The difference is that he will speak about this. And if Jason and his family can make kids rethink getting behind the wheel he is making a difference in a culture that drinking and driving is ok. Kids do it ALL the time. They have for many many years. I grew up in edgerton and that whole Break in the weather is a joke. The tax payers money going to supply police, the bars should have to pay that. They should not allow it anymore. There are thousands of bikes that are drove there. THOUSANDS. People from ALL OVER the US. When you go there early in the morning the next day there is maybe 4 cars there. Jason is not the only one who drinks and make the mistake of getting behind the wheel. There has been another party like this after the aweful accident. And it was the same thing. That whole town the kids grow up drinking all the time. There is nothing in that town but bars!!! No matter how good your parents are or how hard they try. KIDS DRINK. When your kids grow up in a town that you either go sit at that PARK for 8 hours or go get drunk... they are not going to sit at a park. When you write all these nasty things.. Think about yourself. or someone you know. that i am sure got behind a wheel after drinking... it could be you.. and you could be the one that is having all this nasty stuff said about you.

intelligent and meaningful post jsvlparkergrad! I'm sorry, too, for the "loss" of your sister. I don't know what it will take for our State Government to understand how ridiculous the penalties are for drunk drivers, especially repeat offenders.
I'm guessing until someone kills one of our lawmakers family members as the result of drunk driving, they will continue on their merry way, doing whatever they want.

It says in the article that Mr. Kraay was walking on the side of the road, and was sober. So a person can expect to be killed if they are being responsible? My heart goes out to his family. We family members who have had this happen to us never get over the pain.
"Had this guy lived, you'd probably be more likely to agree with me." This comment is so hard to address. If he had lived, but be put in the same situation as my sister, I just don't know. Should people have living wills? For cases like this, you bet. Can you even imagine "living" like a vegetable for 20+ years? In a nursing home? Sure, my baby sister is "here" and not dead, but I just can't imagine what she is aware of, and that is the most devastating part of it all.
I guess through my blathering on about this, I want people to realize that not every victim dies. While my sister breathes on her own, she has to be tube-fed, have her "diapers" changed and moved at regular intervals to prevent bedsores.
How much money do you think SSI has had to pay for 20 years, for the months spent in intensive care, the cost of a nursing home bed all those years, and all the medical bills for the numerous surgeries she's had? 2 million dollars? 4 million? 10 million?
I apologize if my frustration, anger and hurt is not making this post as coherent as I would like. I guess I just want the state to start taking this menace seriously.
PLEASE get these irresponsible drunk people off the roads! To this day I cannot understand why Wisconsin's DUI/OWI laws are among the most lax in the nation. It has to STOP!

I find it completely different to be WALKING on a highway, or DRIVING on a highway. Especially when there are drunks around. You are obviously safer away from the area and in a vehicle. BUT, I am sorry for what happened to your sister. I understand that was a very dificult thing but I still think that walking on the side of the highway, in an area that is crawling with intoxicated people, and in the dark... was just a plain dumb move. Had this guy lived, you'd probably be more likely to agree with me.

It was a choice between getting convicted of hit and run, or probably walking free. Maybe some people would rather have the State convict him of homicide just because someone thought he did it, but I like this way better.

I guess my sister should not have been driving sober with her fiance and 9-year-old son on a Wisconsin highway either. What was SHE thinking???
She was hit by a drunk driver, who had been weaving down the road for miles, witnesses said. Luckily, her son and the guy she was with (ALL sober) had relatively minor injuries.
I got to see the "crime" scene photos, and no one can ever understand what it is like, unless it happens to them.
At the end of July this year will mark 20 years that my sister has spent in a nursing home in a "persistent vegetative state". She was 27 when this happened, didn't get to see her son grow up, nor see her grandson.
For God's sake, get these people OFF the road and in a prison cell for a very long time!

I hate to play Devils Advocate here, but the sober guy should have been wiser, than to walk on the side of a highway, just minutes from hundreds of intoxicated people, in the dark. Not saying his death wasn't tragic, but he shouldn't have been walking there. That's what taxi's are for. But hindsite is 20/20, well, not for him... nevermind.

I was thinking more like 25 to life. The way I look at it, I think if someone takes a life, that person should give a life, either by death or life behind bars. Seems simple to me. The courts only deducting 6yrs from a mans life for taking another life.

Yep, he'll be back in the news in about 3 years with another OWI or drunk driving death. He KILLED SOMEONE! Why are the laws so lax?
