Reducing the need for speed
MILWAUKEE (AP) — A State Patrol official says Wisconsin motorists appear to be slowing down. Transportation safety director Dan Lonsdorf says the rising cost of gasoline is one of the biggest factors is the reduced speeds.
State troopers and sheriff’s deputies also are reporting that they are seeing fewer vehicles on the state’s freeways, and traffic fatalities have dropped 29 percent this year.
The state Department of Transportation found that motorists on four-lane state highways and freeways have reduced their average speed by a little more than 1 mph over the last year.
Lonsdorf says the big chunk of fatality reduction is that people are slowing down and traveling less. cid

Wow what an idea.Slowing down to save gas.
In the 70`s the speed limit was reduced to
55 and more cars were built with smaller engines that couldn`t go over 80 mph.
Now nothing like that is being done.Car companies are bragging they have cars that
get 30mpg.Now 2008!!! In 1980 I drove a
brand new Chevy Monza that got 33mpg easy.
Wow we`ve really progressed in 28 years.

The cops can never slow down drivers like high gas prices can...saving money rules.

I've noticed there's more of a spread now. There's more people driving 55 MPH, and some that still speed. That makes for more interesting driving.
