MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin officials have handed out nearly $230,000 in grants to bolster Wisconsin tourism after last month’s floods.

Gov. Jim Doyle approved $250,000 worth of grants to step up marketing and promotion after national reports of extensive flood damage in Wisconsin. Tourism operators and state officials are concerned those reports may keep people from visiting Wisconsin attractions this summer.

Nonprofit marketing organizations such as chambers of commerce and visitor and convention bureaus are eligible for the money. The recipients include organizations in Crawford and Green counties, Baraboo, La Crosse and Spring Green.

Groups can apply for portions of the remaining $20,000 in grants until Aug. 1.

lakennedy: I understand that it is an industry but I believe our current governor is too focused on that and not bringing industry into the state. High taxes etc will not bring industry to the state.

armyof3: The monkey you are referring to was dealt some really bad deals once he took office. I don't agree with everything he has done but it sure is easy for us to criticize without knowing what the job really entails. I doubt the common person like us could imagine what it would be like to be one of the most, if not the most important person in the world! Besides the democrats that were in office 8 years prior to Bush started that ball rolling.

lakennedy: I agree with you... it is an industry... just because we in janesville may not see that much of an impact that tourism brings, other areas such as the Dells, Delton, Baraboo, and other communities that are close to not just the Sugar River, but think of the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers... what kind of tourism do they bring?? yes, the state is suffering, but at least Doyle's trying to do something about our suffering times unlike the monkey in the white house...

Great job Doyle. Give money to bring the tourists back, what about the industry in this state?
