6 Starbucks to close in Wisconsin

SEATTLE (AP) — Six of the 600 company-owned stores Starbucks plans to close by early next year are in Wisconsin.

The stores are in Appleton, Eau Claire, La Crosse, Madison, Marshfield, and Wisconsin Rapids.

The company announced earlier this month that it would close hundreds of company-owned stores in the U.S. starting in July and continuing through the first half of the next fiscal year. But Starbucks didn’t say which locations would be shut down, until now.

The move to close the stores is a turnabout from Starbucks’ aggressive expansion plans.

Traffic and profits declined recently at Starbucks as the faltering economy has many consumer re-evaluating discretionary spending.

They could save jobs by just lowering the price of their coffee. I mean they have to make just a ton of money off of one cup. I bet the one cup costs the company a quarter to make including advertising, wages etc.

Mocha Moment makes a better cup of coffee than Starbucks. Starbucks and Microsoft follow the same corporate take over the world mentality. Unfortunately everyone at Microsoft wins and Starbucks closes. Until Starbucks learns to patents the coffee bean, enjoy a good cup of coffee from Steve. Because he'll remember your name long after Starbucks is gone

Mocha Moment is a family run business. Why wouldn't anyone want to support that. MM has great coffee and a much better service that starbucks. at least when I go to MM I know they will get my order right the first time too.

I'd rather buy coffee and other things from local companies. Anyone who has half a brain would do so too. I am sickened buy the people who buy coffee from starbucks and buy all their other crap from wal-mart but they in turn wonder why there aren't more small business turning up in this area. Those of you who havn't tried it. Go buy something from a local shop I guarantee you will get a better shopping experience and better service than any "big box store" Oh those of you who think its cool to hang out at starbucks, It not cool it is silly

Reprinted from Consumer Reports http://www.consumerreports.org

March 2007

McDonald's, $1.35, was decent and moderately strong. Although it lacked the subtle top notes needed to make it rise and shine, it had no flaws.

Burger King, $1.40, looked like coffee but tasted more like hot water. It was a little sour, with an unusual hint of chocolate.

Dunkin' Donuts, $1.65, was weak, watery, and pricier than Starbucks. It was inoffensive, but it had no oomph. (If you brew with Dunkin’ beans at home, you can make it stronger.)

Starbucks, $1.55, was strong, but burnt and bitter enough to make your eyes water instead of open.

CR's take. Try McDonald’s, which was cheapest and best, or make your own coffee--just call it something special. The other three were all only OK, but for different reasons.

The Starbucks they are closing in Madison is a duplicate in the market. There is another maybe 2 blocks away--same side of the street and everything.
.
With such a delicate economy, I'm shocked anyone would be bickering over who should close their doors and nearly wishing it on a business. I wouldn't want that bad karma on my shoulders.

Listen to some of you argueing who has the best coffee when it is people who are going to lose there jobs. I myself don't go to Starbucks and only stop at Mocha Moments once in a while but I do feel bad for the ones that will lose out in this whole deal. Can't we set aside our feelings and attitudes toward each other and show some compassion for those involved no matter what type of business it is.

I think Mocha Moments has such a comfortable atmosphere and it's easy on the eyes looking at the woods and enjoying the "moment". I hope they stay for many years.

I happen to like Dunkin' Donuts coffee. I guess that is no surprise based on where I am from. I am very thankful that WalMart now has it and I can brew it at home. It sure is a LOT cheaper than the Yuppie places. Just my opinion.

I think it is great that Mocha Moment does so much work with charity locally, but do not discount Starbucks involvement with charity, just because they are a large company. Starbucks is probably the only coffee chain that size, that is heavily involved in free trade and organic coffee, they deal personally with the farmers of the coffee to make sure they and their families are paid fairly for the hard work they do. Starbucks is involved in many charities, and raising money for the countries where they get their coffee. Also, I do not understand how anyone could say starbucks is not consistent, and tastes bad. I have drank at starbucks for going on 10 years and it has always been great, with great service. Honestly, if they closed both in Janesville, I would never make it through another stressful day shopping. If for nothing else, keep it open for my addiction. :)

Why would someone who doesn't even go to Starbucks say shut it down? I think everyone should have a choice on where to buy coffee. Mocha Moment is a long drive from the east side of town. Who really cares if it stays open or closes if you don't go there. Just idol chit chat. By the way Snarly, nice lick on the GM jobs! Get a life.

I frequent area coffee shops several times a week. Whenever I visit cities outside of Janesville, I try to stop by and try the local coffee shops.
Although I don't get to Mocha Moment as much as I would like to, I have to say that it's overall the best coffee shop I have ever been to. The coffee is good, but it's not what makes Mocha Moment exceptional. What makes Mocha Moment exceptional is the commitment that Steve and Kathy and the rest of the staff have to the community. Every month a donation is made to Habitat for Humanity. When you see Mocha Moment open on a Sunday, they are having a fundraiser. The staff is donating their time and tips to an individual or family in need. On the Mocha Moment website it states that their latest fundraiser raised over $2700 for Derrick Mattingly's family, and in the 5 years Mocha Moment has been in business they have raised over $36,000 in donations for various individuals and families. How many businesses do this?
Also Mocha Moment is much less expensive than Starbucks and any other coffee shop in the area.

Hey...for those of you who want to remain loyal to a locally owned business and enjoy a great cup of coffee with a relaxing evironment, try Java Joys. It's back and open for business. They used to be located in a Janesville Mall kiosk. The new and improved Java Joys even has a drive through. You can find them on the corner of Memorial and Washington across the street from the Mercy Mall.

I really do not enjoy Starbucks. There Mochas taste like hot chocolate i dont know if its because they dont put enough esperesso in or what but Jody's coffee was MUCH better. Sad that Luke's is going to tear it down he could have made a lot of money by keeping it a coffee shop! Also Starbucks has poor service, one time i was completely ignored and then told to wait before someone helped and they werent doing anything so i left. I could care less if the starbucks in Janesville close!

I frequented Jody's often and she didn't close because of the economy. She was given a really great offer and it was perfect time in her life for personal reasons.

Not being a coffee drinker, I really don't care if they close or open more stores. If I were to drink coffee and prices being the same, I would probably choose Mocha Moments because they are local and frequently open on Sundays for charity benefits.

Mocha Moments is much cheaper than Starbucks (about a dollar cheaper for a latte) and their drinks are generally more consistent and taste better. Moreover, the atmosphere is better at Mocha Moments (I used to frequent both places). However, I also like Starbucks and wouldn’t want to see any businesses in town close. With both the national and local economies in question, it is no surprise that these types of establishments would be having difficulties. Both local Starbucks have excellent locations and I don’t foresee them closing. However, if things continue to deteriorate then anything is possible. I will say that if Mocha Moments opened a store on the east side of Janesville, I’d probably never go to Starbucks.

I agree with using Mocha Moments. It is a locally owned business.

So, what's wrong with supporting locally owned and operated businesses over large franchises? The big companies try putting our little companies out and then we get something like GM and Starbucks leaving town.

Besides, Starbucks doesn't support our troops. Since I found that out about 4 or 5 years ago, I have bought only one Starbucks product and it tasted awful!!

Support local businesses!
