Wisconsin continues review of GM grants

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin state officials continue to review whether any of the $10 million given in grants to General Motors for improvements at its Janesville plant can be recouped.

The car company announced in June that it would close the plant by 2010. GM said Tuesday that closure will come sooner, but did not say when.

Wisconsin gave GM three grants totaling $10 million in 2004 and 2005 to help with a $175 million plant overhaul and worker training.

Gov. Jim Doyle’s spokeswoman Carla Vigue says state officials still believe some money can be recouped, but it is not clear how much. She says that may not be known until closer to when the plant closes.

Vigue says state officials continue to work with GM to maintain a presence in Janesville.

GM was never "loyal" to Janesville beyond their "bottom dollar."
And, having said that, I was loyal to GM because of their local presence.
But now the picture has changed. I will base my future purchases on MY "bottom dollar."
GM is welcome to compete, but at this point I don't think competition is in their vocabulary.
ADIOS SENIOR.

Ho Chunk isn't "stiffing us" Doyle was... and the court saw through his charade. Now, when the "redman" plays by the " whiteman's" rules we blame them? I don't think so...at least not justifiably so.

As Gm requested a 3 Billion dollar loan today, I doubt it is high on their must pay list...jmo
It will cost almost that much in legal fees to recoup it...jmo
As a former employee I am trading my GM truck in for a Toyota...that's how disgusted I am..peace

I agree with the comments left. We should get it back. It's all so sad though. GM's exec. leave with huge salary increases and pay raises even though people knew for years that gas was going to rise again. They were left without even one fuel efficient small car; indeed, the big three have only 1 vehicle in the top 10 of fuel efficiency. I grew up in Detroit and lived through the 70s, so I can tell you that everyone knew this day would come again. The workers were screwed by the execs, and then the execs and analysts blamed them for their benefit packages (negotiated in the 80s in lieu of pay raises at the encouragement of execs.).

I agree, take it all back. GM shouldn't be allowed to keep money given to them based on promises they made. Doesn't the state have a legal department that keeps track of all CONTRACTS??? After all, that is what this was. An agreement (CONTRACT) between Wisconsin and General Motors.

Go after it all. They screwed us, so why give them any pity. They did not keep their promise like they said they would, (as usual) so go after every penny we gave them.
