MILWAUKEE

With as many as 100 vacancies expected within the Milwaukee Fire Department by the year’s end, the city is hoping to boost its ranks by accepting applications for firefighting positions for the first time in five years.

The department began its 21-day application process Saturday morning when five firehouses were opened and staffed by MFD personnel, the Fire and Police Commission and the Department of Employee Relations.

Applicants may obtain information about the job of a firefighter, minimum qualifications and examination requirements.

Fire officials said there are 79 vacancies, and retirements this year will create a larger need for new recruits.

All applications must be received or postmarked no later than Aug. 1. Applications will also be available online after Saturday at www.milwauke.gov/jobs/firefighter.

Applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be invited to take a written test in August. Other components of the examination process will be administered to eligible applicants before the end of the year, including a physical ability test and an oral examination.

Applicants can obtain additional information and keep updated on the firefighter selection process by calling (414) 286-3472.

Well, here is the corrected link:
http://www.milwaukee.gov/jobs/firefighte...

I'm grateful we have people willing to work as firefighters and cops. They have what can be tedious, boring, jobs 99% of the time that without warning turn into extremely dangerous and terrifying experiences.

Thanks for lessons in The Technicalities of Internet Jargon 101. I think the editors will understand my point, which is if you copy and paste it into a browser it doesn't work. I’m simply trying to help people get the right address; I’m not trying to purposely point out mistakes by the writers. I'll be sure to be more –technically-- correct in my next post right after I’m done editing my ten year old website that gets 40,000 hits month. All this time I had it wrong, go figure.

Well said. Technically, that is not a link, but a website address. If it was a link, you could click on it and your browser would go there.

NOTE: Someone needs to edit the link above as it has Milwaukee spelled wrong (at the time of this post), which makes the link bad.

Being a firefighter isn’t about one’s personal safety, but the safety of others. Granted, nobody wants to die, but it takes a certain type of person to be willing to risk their lives to save others. This isn’t just about job openings. Those who truly want to be fire fighters would accept the risk involved regardless of pay.

Don't they shoot firefighters in Milwaukee, or is that just in Chicago?
