Teen to be sentenced Friday in Rock County death
From the WCLO newsroom:
Daniel B. Fleming of Chicago turns 18 Saturday, the day after he is scheduled to be sentenced in Rock County on charges related to the drunk driving death of one of his friends.
The crash occurred in the Town of Center last summer, killing 18-year-old Dayne Cutler of Chicago and injuring a 16-year-old Janesville girl. According to the criminal complaint, Cutler begged Fleming not to drive because he had been drinking.
Fleming pleaded guilty to two of the felony charges in April.

It really doesn't matter now what the deceased young man said before the accident and why he still got into the car. What matters is that a young man's life is over because his friend decided to drink and drive. This happens everyday in our country. My own sister was killed by a drunk driver. We need to do something as a society to keep people, young and old from drinking and getting behind the wheel of a car. I personally do not know the answer to this,as our lawmakers do not either. Our country needs to find a solution to this sad and avoidable problem. My heart and prayers go out to the family that lost their loved one. May God bless you and keep you during this time.

Good points Gary and Upside..
While this death is definitley a tragedy, I think that it is equally tragic that this story will be forgotten in two weeks, and virtually nobody will make different choices when it comes to drinking and driving because of it.

I am not saying anything against the deceased, I am very sorry for his passing. I just want others out there to think and know that they have the choice NOT to get in the car.

Good point, but any post where a death is involved is a minefield. I can see that you are making a useful observation that might save someone else's life, but you may find that others will see a personal attack against the deceased. They will then view this as a free pass to say socially unacceptable things about you and feel self-righteous about it. This is particularly attractive to people with low self-esteem and limited intellectual resources.

My heart goes out to the families that are affected by this situation. On the other note, if the deceased begged for the kid not to drive because he had been drinking then why did he even get in the car with him? He should have called someone else for a ride or taken the keys away.... This certainly could have prevented his death.
