An excavator cut into a power line behind the main building at Blackhawk Technical College’s main campus this morning.

A fire alarm was tripped as a precaution. The alarm sent students and staff at main campus into the cold for a short time.

Classes continued, but officials were worried they’d have to cut power to at least part of the building in order to fix the break.

“Power has been in and out today, and they’re working on it right now,” BTC spokesman Len Walker said at 9:05 a.m.

Walker said officials were not sure if classes would continue today. He said he would inform The Janesville Gazette as soon as that decision is made.

The town of Beloit Fire Department responded to the call at 7:38 a.m.
