The Janesville School Board met this morning and decided that mediation holds the most hope for settlement of the 2007-09 teachers contract.

Mediation is tentatively scheduled to begin Feb. 11.

The two sides had considered meeting again without a mediator on Wednesday, but Superintendent Tom Evert said the teachers union issued an “ultimatum,” saying that if the board was not willing to accept the teachers’ salary offer, there was no point in meeting.

Jennifer Fanning, co-lead negotiator for the teachers, said the hadn't meant their message to be taken as an ultimatium, but negotiators didn't want to waste time in a meeting with no prospect for movement on the salary issue.

"That's fine. We will go ahead and go to mediation, and I think if we meet with a mediator, they can probably bring us to some sort of compromise," Fanning said.
