MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Subzero temperatures have caused more people to let their vehicles idle and warm up before driving away.

Police say it's also increased opportunities for car thieves.

Ten cars have been stolen in the last several weeks in Madison.

Police are advising motorists not to make it so easy for the thieves.

Madison Captain Cam McLay says thefts of opportunity are easily prevented -- stay with your idling vehicle, or lock the doors and monitor the vehicle.

In two recent cases, the car thieves probably got more than they bargained for.

One car left running outside a store had the owner's birds inside.

In another case, the car had just a gallon of gas in it, but the broken fuel gauge was stuck on a half-tank.
