Agency chiefs told to tighten belts on state spending
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Doyle administration is telling state agency heads to start a new round of belt-tightening because of the tight budget situation.
A new estimate says state tax revenues could drop by $300 million to $400 million over the next year and a half.
Administration Secretary Michael Morgan sent a memo directing agency heads to keep nonessential job vacancies unfilled, seek alternatives to out-of-state travel and limit out-of-state trips to as few individuals as possible.
He also placed a moratorium on requests for new office space and lease renewals. The department will review current leases up for renewal and continue them on a month-to-month basis if possible.
And the memo says more moves will be needed to balance the budget.
