MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The head of the Wisconsin Department of Revenue has assured state lawmakers that the tax system is stable, secure and sound.''

Secretary Roger Ervin spoke to an Assembly committee on Thursday in the wake of three security breaches in a little over a year involving state agencies. In each case, state residents' Social Security numbers were visible on the outside of mailings.

Ervin says two employees in his department have been fired for not meeting the department's standards related to the handling of confidential data. He would not disclose other details.

The committee was told that state agencies are moving away from using Social Security numbers as identifiers except when absolutely necessary.
