UPDATE: Fire destroys barn
EDGERTON—Bill Trick was in the barn feeding horses when fire broke out in the 110-by- 36-foot structure early Tuesday night.
His wife was in the house, across the road, when she noticed flames and alerted him, allowing Trick to escape without injury, according to the Dane County Sheriff’s Department that responded at 5:34 p.m. to the scene, at 34 Craig Road in Albion Township, with Edgerton, Fort Atkinson, Stoughton and Cambridge fire departments.
Construction tools, a 1974 Dodge pickup-up truck, forklift, 500 bales of straw and 2,000 bales of hay were stored in the barn along with horses, which were moved to safety and uninjured, the sheriff’s department said.
The barn and its contents, valued at around $150,000, were destroyed, according to officials.
A near-by machine shed and a horse barn suffered minor heat damage, said Capt. Adam Walton of the Edgerton Fire Department.
Electrical heat tape, used to wrap pipes to prevent them from freezing, may have been the source of the fire, but its cause remains undetermined and under investigation, Walton said.
Firefighters remained on scene until almost midnight and used 41,000 gallons of water and 25 gallons of foam in their efforts to extinguish the blaze.
