Lawmakers consider repeal of Wisconsin's abortion ban

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - State lawmakers are reviving an attempt to repeal Wisconsin's 158-year-old ban on abortions -- which they fear would be enforced if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Wisconsin is one of only four states with laws still on the books making abortions illegal.

But Wisconsin Planned Parenthood political director Chris Taylor says Wisconsin is the only state whose law includes penalties for the women seeking an abortion.

Wisconsin Right to Life supports keeping the law in place in case the court ruling legalizing abortions nationally is overturned.

A bill to repeal Wisconsin's law was introduced last session but went nowhere. The new proposal is from Democratic Sen. Mark Miller of Monona and Democratic Rep. Terese Berceau of Madison.

As sad as abortions can be, they need to be legalized. There are certain circumstances where abortions are necessary. Example: Someone I know was pregnant. During the ultrasound, the doctor confirmed that the baby's brain was not physically devoloping. With that, she had an abortion. Also, sometimes a woman gets pregnant only to find out that the baby is hurting her and could possibly kill her and/or the baby will die. Again, abortion is necessary. Without those circumstances, I'm against abortion; however, there should be adequate birth control for everyone. Or, taxes need to be raised in order for the state to take care of all of the unwanted children. Take your pick.

"Why can't people realize that once abortion is criminalized, all women that have miscarriages will be suspects? Do you really want women that are suffering pain and trauma to be questioned by police? Think about it- is it worth a woman suffering a miscarriage to be charged with murder because of a botched doctor's report?"

WOW!!! What a stretch. But I guess you have to consider the source.

And butteryfly, are you saying that African-Americans should be FORCED to have babies they don't want? Thay we need to protect blacks from themselves? That is so disgustingly patronizing. If Black women are having abortions, it's because they CHOOSE them, not because Hitler is shoving them into the clinics.

Butterfly.... Just to play devils advocate let me ask you who would be supporting the mothers (assuming a majority of them are single) and the resulting infant of the millions of African Americans you say are "murdered". As far as pro choice goes, if the supporters of pro choice aren't supporting a womans freedom to chose whether or not she has a child, whose agenda are they actually supporting (as you infer in your text). I know that I agree with pro choice and for the life of me I can't think of who you may be speaking. Enlighten all of us.

JViers makes a good point.

If Roe v. Wade is overturned and this law is enforced, only the rich will be able to obtain abortions. No one should kid themselves, they'll still happen. For the wealthy, it will be a matter of going somewhere where it is legal, or bringing in a doctor who doesn't mind breaking the law and using money to hide the event. For the poor, it will mean back-alley abortions.

Destroying a small mass of cells that has the potential to become a human being is not the same as killing a person. Whether it be to allow mothers to get into a better financial situation before bringing a child into the world or saving the life of the mother (it's called triage), early-term abortions should be one option among many for women.

Burceau represents me and I will definitely be contacting her office to encourage her in this endeavor.

Abortion is by far the number one killer of African Americans, at about 375,000 per year. Since 1973 about 13 million African Americans have been killed through abortion. That's a number that would make Hitler with his dream of a white race very proud. When you call yourself "Pro Choice" have you ever thought about whose agenda you're really supporting?

And please re-consider your argument that the safety and well being of a killer is justification to legalize murder.

Who wouldn't want to go back to back-alley coat hanger abortions. Regression is the best way to move forward, I mean backward.
