Updated: Police respond to report of shooting
Janesville police responded to a report of a shooting at 8:54 p.m. Saturday at the YMCA, 221 Dodge St., Lt. Tom Wolfram said.
A juvenile was taken to Mercy Hospital with a leg wound, he said.
No other details were available, he said.
According to police reports, the reporting party said they heard four gun shots along with two large groups of people scattering in different directions after the gun shots.
Police reports state the case is gang related, and list an 18-year-old Janesville man and a 17-year-old Janesville boy as victims. The 18-year-old man was treated and released at Mercy Hospital.
The YMCA is only opened until 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and a front desk clerk there this morning did not know anything about the reported shooting.

faith 48, I agree with you. There is too much of this senseless violence. I take my kids to the Y all the time. Now I guess I will pack my 9MM from now on to protect my family.

Let's just be thankfull that nobody was killed or any little children got in the way. this is such a terrible act and thing's are not going to get any better which is so sad. I had the scanner on and I will say that the police were right on top of it, they caught the responsible partie's in no time, now let's hope that they don't get just a slap on the hand, they need to be put behind bar's, The next time could be really bad, people killed and much more! We need to let other gang's know that we mean business, lock these kid's up!

mymaro...you say you enjoy living here but you are definately negative. Instead of complaining here, are you doing something about all the bad things happening? are you going to city council meetings? Attending a PTO/PTA meeting in your district? attending any other service/community oriented meeting? Are you a big brother/sister to some of these so called "punks" you speak of? Although they don't solve everything, you get your concerns out. You voice would be better heard OUT in the community rather than complaining here. I don't think the powers that be check the Gazette Blogs looking for a better way. And my dear, my point was...instead of bashing and complaining and passing blame, be part of the solution, not part of the problem. And by not having your voice heard outside of this forum, by not telling those immediately in control of situations, you are part of the problem. Don't sit on your hands. As far as those "gang banger wanna be punks"...was one of those individuals pointing a gun at you? stealing something from your car? Police need probable cause to monitor individuals. Walking down the street looking tough doesn't qualify. If that were true, there would be more police in the school hallways.i have lived on the "east" side (if we are going to become regional)and I saw just as many kids running around and could most likely causing trouble, but the police arent there either. just because a person wears clothes from the Gap rather than something "suspicious" (not that I know what that is), doesn't mean they are less likely to break the law. If a police cruiser sat in a specific neighborhood, it might be considered profiling and may actually cause more problems rather than helping. And as for "cruising", I used to be a downtown "cruiser" and I don't think the authorities are as worried about getting rid of it, but more concerned about the safety of all drivers on Milton Ave. They are out there because the MAJORITY of people are there. Although, I have driven along Milton Ave towards the downtown and those "other" areas that you speak of and I see the police there and not on Milton. Don't you think they are just making the rounds? And...actually...the main point was...the police couldn't have prevented nor predicted it the incident at the YMCA. So bashing them is a mute point.

I am very confused...although the situation is unfortunate, how come we are focusing on one city against another? Where do you think our youth of today gets our prejudice from? And what does the Janesville police have to do with it? They can't be everywhere. Last time I looked, we lived in a Democratic and free country. Not a police state. They can't be everywhere and they certainly couldn't have predicted this nor prevented it. Only the individuals involved could have prevented it. Maybe if they had friends and family who didn't judge others and didn't think everyone is the enemy. We all live in the same country and we all want peace, freedom and to be able to live in a safe place. Can't you help a little rather than bash each other?
Can't you help prevent such a "decline" that you assume is coming?

I tend to agree with you, mymaro about Beloit getting dumped on by many residents in Janesville who have no idea what the city is really like. You lost me on the JPD comment, however. JPD is a well run, organized, highly trained and professional department who has a very good reputation in the LE community. They have long been regarded by their peers as being very anal about procedure, almost military in their demeanor with the public and very tight lipped with the public they serve...in other words, very professional. The biggest reason Janesville has the reputation of being a cleaner and friendlier city than Beloit is because of JPD keeping negative things out of the law abiding public's impression of their city....which is professional and effective law enforcement.
