Blackhawk Technical College wants to construct a $4.5 million Traffic Safety Center to attract students from Wisconsin and Illinois.

Uses would include emergency driving courses and tactical scenario training for police, firefighters and EMTs, driver safety courses, motorcycle safety and driver safety courses for business and industry.

The facility would include a track about a mile long, equipped with a skid pad for hydroplaning and other features, as well as a 14,000-square-foot building.

Funding would rely on public and private dollars.

Officials hope to start building next year somewhere on the grounds of the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport on Janesville’s south side. The site is expected to take up about 40 of the airport’s 1,500 acres.

A full story with a drawing of the track will appear in today’s Janesville Gazette.
