MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Governor Doyle is ordering all state agencies to review their procedures for protecting personal information.

His order comes after the second gaffe in a little over a year resulted in Social Security numbers going out on a public mailing.

Texas-based EDS Corporation sent the mailings late last week to 260,000 Wisconsin residents. The informational brochures included the recipients' Social Security number on the address label. The mailing was done on behalf of the state Department of Health and Family Services.

An EDS spokesman says the problem has been identified and fixed. He says letters will be sent to those affected next week with a new number for a special hot line related to this issue.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike blasted the state's response to a mistake that raised the risk of identity theft.

State Senator Ted Kanavas says he'll propose a law change to set up emergency credit counseling and call centers for future security breaches.

I'm surprised Doyle doesn't make Wisconsin residents SS number available to any marketing firm, in exchange for a totally unrelated campaign donation. He doesn't have a limitless supply of no-bid contracts to hand out, after all.

Please note that, while EDS was the private contractor involved for the issues with this recent mailing, they are NOT the private contractor that caused the IRS issues previously. They have 30 years of service with the state without such incident. So they did not "do it again", Kenbjammen.

I know some an Evansville family, hard workers and great parents, who got cut off from free lunch for their kids. The reason? They wouldn't provide the SS numbers to the school. The dad is a college student, the mom is a researcher in Academia and they don't make much money. But the school didn't want to see tax returns, payroll checks, or anything else. THEY JUST WANTED SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS!!!
But you can't count on schools and 'verification" people to keep your identity safe! What does a school or social worker care if you or your kids have identity theft? if you're poor,. you're trash, and you don;t deserve protection. At least that what this family learned. 'Don't ask for help unless you are willing to give up your safety'

I may have been thinking of driver license #. Thanks for the FYI. Thank goodness I do not have to be held accountable for everything as our government is.

I think that Britney may be may be a little busy right now, but she might have more time now that she doesn't have to watch the kids. I have an insurance company (well-known, public holding) that uses my SS# as the policy#. It's on every document that I get from them. They want me to write it on the checks. The IRS wants the number on the checks. Some people have the number printed along with their other personal information on their checks. These numbers are not secret and offer no security, but our government thinks that they are. "Local Citizen Calls State Lawmakers 'Morons'".

Oops? Dumb? I am a very UNHAPPY Wisconsin resident, whose disabled child's SSN was on the mail I got from the State yesterday. My question is WHY is the State even sending SSN's to a MAIL HOUSE for printing and mailing to be done????? The SSN's should not even be part of the file they send. This is absolutely WRONG, and now I have to deal with this too, on top of everything else every single day! Absolutely Ridiculous. I think that the lawmakers should stop name calling and laughing and FIX THE PROBLEMS? wow....that is all I have to say.

In other news, other lawmakers, lawyers and bearcats were also heard saying “oops!,” “Man am I glad that wasn’t in my department!” “Don’t mess with Texas!” and “I think we can get Brittany to do the new theme song for EDS – Oops I did it again, what do you guys think?”

Who was the lawmaker that called the state response to the security breach 'dumb'?
