Average gasoline price for early January is highest ever
WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin motorists are paying record prices for unleaded gasoline for early January - nearly $1 more than a year ago. And experts say it likely means some bigger bills in spring when prices historically spike.
AAA Wisconsin says the statewide average price today is $3.14 a gallon.
Oil Price Information Service analyst Tom Kloza says it's likely Wisconsin will set a new all-time high price for gasoline in the spring. But he doesn't expect prices to remain that high for long.
The record set last May is $3.43 a gallon.
Experts say they do not expect prices to reach $4 a gallon, despite the record January price.
A year ago, the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in Wisconsin was $2.28.

I did find some information on the net from an article in the New York Times on 1/11/08. It stated that when adjusted for inflation, gas prices from 1980 to 1982 are actually 30% to 40% higher than today.

This is just a question I've pondered for a while. I know this is a wisconsin paper, but why is it that If I'm in Loves Park IL and I drive 1 mile to a different gas station, it can be .10 to .25 cheaper a gallon? Or vice versa. Is it really the goverment that is controlling prices or is it these money mongers who own these certain Gas stations?

And whenever a gas station owner wants to give discounts for various things, the state threatens to shut them down.

Gasoline prices are outrageous. They're even higher out here in California. I'm just wondering, though, if the prices might have been higher in the 80's when adjusted for inflation.
